Wetzstein Back on Top during Tasseldega Nights

Wetzstein Back on Top during Tasseldega Nights

By Bill Nelson - July 11, 2015 - Spring Valley MN

A picture perfect day and evening with tons of activities at the speedway during the annual Minnesota Corn Growers Tasseldega Nights promotion. A large crowd gathered on the free admission night courtesy of the MN Corn Growers and ton of sponsors, with displays, learning centers and activities for everyone before the traditional racing action.

A big pileup in the Wagner Trucking USRA B-Modifieds on lap one saw the field double back up for a complete restart. Cole Denner got the jump with Cole Queensland quickly moving into second. With three laps completed Queensland moved under Denner to take over the lead. Queensland hung on the bottom rail of the speedway while Kylie Kath and Erik Kanz closed in running the top groove but were unable to get any closer to Queensland than a few car lengths as he took home the checkers. Kanz and Kath along with John VanMinsel put on the racing action for the fans during the midway point of the race as they ran three wide around the speedway trying to settle the second spot. Kanz, Kath, VanMinsel and Scott Demmer rounded out the top five. Andrew Bleess won the b-Feature with heat races going to Denner, Kath, JT Wasmund and Alex Williamson.

Each week I mention how the KIK Graphics WISSOTA Street Stocks have some of the best racing but tonight the finish was even more exciting than the rest of the action during their feature which was outstanding by itself. Kyle King got the early lead with a four wide battle for second on lap one. Danny Richards asserted himself in second on lap two and took the lead on lap six as he and King swapped sliders on lap five. A caution on lap five bunched up the field with Richards leading. King, Travis Krause and Mike Blowers were three wide for second. They battled until a caution on lap fifteen and on the restart they dropped King back to fourth and for the final three circuits Richards, Krause and Blowers battled for the win. Different lines and different leaders over the last two laps with Blowers sneaking past Richards for the win but Krause almost upset the apple cart as he crossed the line .043 seconds behind Blowers for the second spot dropping Richards back to third as all three cars crossed the line side by side. King held on for the fourth spot ahead of Bernie Adams. Heat races went to the father/son duo of Bernie and Kory Adams

Tammy Soma Clark took the early lead in the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature with big pack of cars racing for second through tenth right behind her. Ryan Goergen sat in second on lap two as the pack settled down. A restart on lap three saw Jared Boumeester take over the top spot with Goergen holding onto second.   On lap seven Dustin Scott moved into the second spot. Scott was able to keep close to Boumeester but was unable to close the gap as Boumeester held on for the win. Scott, Goergen, Garitt Wytaske and Jason Born rounded out the top five. Jonathan Olmscheid, Josh Crary and Scott won the heat races.

In the Brauer Roofing WISSOTA Super Stock division Brandon Duellman and Brian Fetting entertained the crowd as they raced close side by side for the first four laps until Duellman gained a slight edge. Adam Stockhausen and Tommy Richards raced for the third spot. On lap six Fetting took over the lead. A restart on lap ten saw Jeff Brauer and Richards’s race side by side and right past Fetting to duel over the lead now. Richards gained the advantage and held on for the win. Brauer, Neil Eckhart, Stockhausen and Fetting rounded out the top five. Heat races were won by Stockhausen and Brauer.

With money from an anonymous donor again this evening the NAPA AutoCare USRA Modifeds were racing for the $1,000 top prize.   Steve Wetzstein drew the pole for the feature event and was unchallenged to the finish. Early on in the race Jason Cummins and Joe Ludemann battled for the second spot. Cummins took the spot while Keith Foss started working through the field. By lap seven Foss worked into the third spot and slowly gained on Cummins in second. By lap fifteen when Foss finally worked past Cummins, Wetzstein had worked out to almost a full straight lead. While Josh Angst and Cummins now raced for the third spot. At the finish though it was all Wetzstein taking home his first checkers of the season with Foss, Cummins, Angst and Jacob Bleess rounding out the top five. Wetzstein, Dustin Scott and Bleess took home the heat race wins.

Racing action resumes next week with the annual NAPA Gopher 50 featuring the World of Outlaw Late Models and the Napa AutoCare USRA Modifieds. Racing action is set to start at 6:30.

Don’t forget the upcoming World Modified Dirt Track Championships July 22-25th featuring the USMTS modifieds along with the USRA Stock Cars and WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds racing all three nights.
