Clean Sweeps Highlight Racing At “The Creek

Spring Valley, MN (May 11)

By: Todd Narveson

A blustery and cold evening greeted race fans at Deer Creek Speedway this week. A smaller than normal crowd of die-hard fans witnessed 110-cars take to the track. Rent-N-Save of Austin presented the program which also honored the Mom’s in attendance for Mother’s Day weekend.

Jake Timm, Jim Chisholm, Nick Koehler and Dustin Doughty got out the brooms and scored clean sweeps when they won their heat in feature race in their respective classes. Jeff Brauer nabbed his 60th career win at the speedway which added to his all-time lead in wins.

The first main event of the night was the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Nick Koehler and Spencer Stock led the 21-car pack to the green flag for their 18-lap race.

Koehler darted to the lead which he would never relinquish. Cole Searing worked from fourth to second early in the race but could not get close enough to seriously challenge Koehler. Brandon Jensen slipped past Kylie Kath for third on lap five.

Koehler led every lap for the win in a caution-free race. Searing finished in second with Jensen in third at the checkered flag. Last week’s winner Mitch Weiss was fourth and Kath finished out the top five.

The Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stock feature started with Eric Riley, Kory Adams and Nick Schwebach three wide for the lead. Riley held the point, but a spun car halted the race.

Adams challenged Riley for the lead on the restart while Schwebach was busy trying to fend off Zach Elward. Schwebach then stuck it in three wide for the lead with Elward close behind. Then Adams and Riley went side-by-side while Elward zipped to third.

Dustin Doughty entered the picture and challenged Schwebach for the fourth position. Doughty was on the charge and got to third and then went three abreast for the lead. Adams took the lead on lapsix and then Riley threw a slide job on lap 7 to regain the top spot. Doughty was right there and used the low groove to snap the lead away from Riley.

Doughty checked out from there to earn the win while Schwebach bounced back to finish second. Elward finished in  third while Riley wound up fourth and Adams rounded out the top five.

The National Fleet Graphics USRA B-Mods started their main event with a dandy three car battle. Ben Moudry took the lead from row one, but he was pursued by Dan Hovden and Jim Chisholm. Hovden stole the lead on lap three, but Moudry rallied and reclaimed the spot.

Those two ran the mid to top groove and Chisholm worked the low side. Then Hovden slowed on lap five to trigger a yellow flag. While the race up front was good, Shaun Walksi who started seventeenth was already in the top five at this point.

Moudry continued to run the top while Chisholm challenged low. They had a very good race going up front. Chisholm was able to move alongside Moudry on several occasions and finally took the lead on lap 14. Walski had now charged to third with a few laps left.

Chisholm would score his second win in a row with Moudry second. Walski’s incredible charge ended in third and Josh Roney had his best Deer Creek finish on fourth. Cole Denner ran in the top five most of the race and finished fifth.

Dennis Dunbar who made his return to racing after an eleven year layoff, led the Brauer Roofing WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Ryan Wiome and Jeff Brauer came up to challenge him and they went three wide for the lead on lap two.

Brauer raced to the lead and brought Wiome along with him to second. Neil Eckhart slipped past Dunbar for third and then chased down the lead duo, Eckhart got to second on lap nine and for a couple of laps battled Brauer for the lead.

Brauer pulled away to win his 60th career feature at the speedway, Eckhart finished in second with Wiome third. Cole Searing once again made the long haul from South Dakota and finished fourth while Schatney Sanders was fifth.

Jake Timm drew the outside pole for the NAPA Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature and just plain took off. Timm opened up a big lead as Brad Waits took second and was challenged by Adam Hensel. Joel Alberts was fourth and Ryan Gustin came from tenth to fifth. An early caution negated Timm’s big lead but it would not slow him down.

Timm took off again as Hensel wrestled second way from Waits on lap five. The top five took off and ran in formation until lap 13 when Gustin got by Alberts for fourth. The leaders were in lapped traffic and Hensel was able to gain a bit on Timm when the caution came out on lap 17.

Timm now had clear track in front of him, but Hensel made a couple of attempts to take the lead. Gustin battled Waits for third and Brandon Davis came alive and passed Gustin was up to fourth after he started 17th. Davis got past Waits for third but a yellow with two to go negated the pass.

Timm led the two lap dash to pick up the win with Hensel a close second. Waits finished in the third spot with Davis’ fine run had him in fourth. Gustin wound round out the top five.
