Deer Creek Speedway
Epic Finishes Highlight Pink Out Night
Spring Valley, MN (June 19)
By: Todd Narveson
It was a glorious night for racing at Deer Creek Speedway for the annual Pink-Out Night. The night is meant to raise awareness and educate people about breast cancer. It is also a good support event for those battling breast cancer.
There were all kinds of activities to raise money for Join The Journey. There was a 50/50 raffle, silent auction, event t-shirt sales and the push up challenge for the feature winners.
Each feature winner was challenged to od push ups in victory lane. Many businesses and individuals donated money for each push up the driver could do. When the five features were concluded, $11,835 was raised just with the push ups.
The program was presented by First Farmers & Merchants Bank, Weber Auto Parts, Evans Printing and Old Dutch Snacks. Over 100 cars signed in this week and the feature races were outstanding.
Twenty-six USRA B-Mods rolled out for their 18-lap feature. Dan Hovden came to town tonight and took off from row one and opened up a huge lead for most of the race. Hovden started to work lapped traffic just eight laps into the race.
Brandon Hare and Trevor Fecht had a great battle for second. Eyes were on Jim Chisholm who had and eight race win streak at eh speedway. Chisholm started seventh and worked his way to the front. Chisholm got to third on lap 12 and a yellow on lap 15 erased Hovden’s huge lead.
Chisholm darted to second and then set after Hovden. On the final lap Chisholm threw a slide job on Hovden in turn three to take the lead. Hovden crossed over Chisholm in turn four as the duo roared towards the checkered flag. Hovden won by a couple of feet and ended Chisholm’s streak. Hare was third, Fecht was fourth and Noah Grinstead was fifth. Jett Sorensen passed 11-cars and earned a huge $400 hard charger award from Von Hagen Trucking.
Dustin Doughy stormed from eighth to the lead in the Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Doughty took off and opened up a substantial lead. Braden Brauer worked his way to the front and got to second.
With five laps to go, Brauer was over a second behind Doughty, but that did not deter him. Brauer reeled in Doughty and passed him in turn two of the final lap. Doughty charged to the inside and pulled a perfect slider in turn three to retake the point.
While Doughty slid to the top to take the lead, Brauer dove low when the duo came out of four. With the checkered flag in the air, Brauer slipped past Doughty to steal the win by a fender at the line. Zach Elward finished third, Kory Adams was fourth and Nick Schwebach fifth.
Dylan Goettl drove from third to the lead in the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds on lap one. Goettl fended off a couple of challengers on a couple of restarts. Goettl would lead the entire 18-lap race to score his third win of the year.
Behind him the race was good for second through fifth. Zach Benson, Kadden Kath and Adam Martinson put on a show in the battle. Benson would finish in second with Kath coming from row five to third. Martinson took home his second top five in as many weeks and Jason Vandekamp drove from 14th to fifth.
A big wreck in turn four on lap one slowed the start of the WISSOTA Super Stock main event. A.J. Zvorak led early until he was passed by Brandon Duellman on lap four.
Ryan Wiome came from row four to second and then passed Duellman for the lead on lap 11. From there Wiome led the rest of the way for the win. Wiome also earned a $100 hard charger award from Loren & Diane Hoppe. Duellman was second with Neil Eckhart in third, Spencer Stock in fourth and Kevin Hager fifth.
The story of the night was in the 25-lap Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature. Joe Ludemann and Kevin Stoa brought the field to the green flag. Stoa jumped to the lead and quickly pulled away.
Stoa held a big lead until a caution came out on lap 20. There were a couple of rough starts that knocked out top five contenders Ryan Wetzstein and Aaron Benson. When things settled down, Stoa once again pulled away from the pack.
Stoa led the final five laps to take the very popular win and his first at Deer Creek since October 2, 1999. It was only Stoa’s second week of racing this year after not racing at all in 2020 and everything came together for him to take the win. A.J. Hoff had his best run in his rookie season for second and J.T. Wasmund also had a good run in third. David Baxter was solid in fourth and Joe Horgdal was fifth in his first appearance of the season.
