Zieman, Kennedy & Sass Hoist Deer Creek Trophies

Spring Valley, MN (September 4)

By: Todd Narveson

After a week of much needed rain, the J&S-JCB Fastrack 40 was held at Deer Creek Speedway. The United States Modified Touring Series was the main attraction along with the USRA Stock Cars, B-Mods and Late Models.

It was a beautiful day for racing and 165-cars jammed the pit area. J&S Repair-JCB, Orchard Creek Transportation and Featherlite Graphics all helped support the monster sized program.

Seventeen USRA Late Models took the green flag for their main event. Justin Sass took off from row one and lead all the way to the checkered flag. Sass held his ground through a number of yellow flags for his first win of the season.

Brett Shafer finished second to Sass while Lance Hofer came home in third. Max Nelson would finish in fourth and Lucas Peterson was fifth.

Brayden Gjere took the early lead in the USRA Stock Car finale. It was a good race up front early on with plenty of tight racing. Xander Treichel added to the drama of the race when he rolled his machine on the front stretch. Treichel was uninjured but it did take some time to clear his crumpled car.

Josh Zieman roared up from the seventh starting position to grab the lead. A great race ensued for second between Pate Graham and Dillon Anderson. Mitch Hovden hung close to that duo and tried to make it a three-car tussle.

Zieman led the pack to the checkered flag for his first Deer Creek win and second of the season. Graham held off Anderson for second with Hovden in fourth. Kevin Donlan made some mid to late race moves to finish fifth.

A gigantic 60-car USRA B-Mod field used six heat races and three B-mains to get the drivers set for the 27-car feature field. Hunter Kennedy darted off of row one to lead the start of the race.

Kennedy was unfazed by the numerous cautions during the race. Kennedy held his ground and was able to distance himself from the pack each time. Kennedy led all the way for his first Deer Creek win and third of the season.

Deer Creek track champion Jim Chisholm drove from 11th to finish in second. Josh Smith came from row five to score a third-place finish, Jason Schlangen finished in fourth and Taylor Ausrud was fifth.
