JORDAN WATSON EXTENDS POINT LEAD WITH WILD BIG BLOCK WIN

DSC00700By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE – Jordan Watson help his own cause tremendously by avoiding several early race tangles and driving to his fifth win of the season in the NAPA Big Block Modified feature on Delmar Little League Night, Saturday at the Delaware International Speedway.

It took four attempts to get the first lap of the 25-lap Big Block feature in the books and when it finally was, three of the top five drivers in points were at the rear of the field after being involved in spins. Matt Hawkins would lead the first lap but the yellow was out for a fourth time when H.J. Bunting made contact with point leader Jordan Watson and spun making him the fourth of the top five in points to go to the rear.

Hawkins would continue to set the pace with Scott VanGorder, Bobby Watkins and Shawn Ward in the top four. Watson had somehow avoided all the mishaps and was running in the first spot. On lap three he got by Ward and two laps later split Watkins and VanGorder to pull into second. Howard O’Neal would get around to bring out the fifth caution on lap seven pulling Watson on the bumper of Hawkins on the restart.

Watson continued his charge on the restart taking the lead. At this point Jamie Mills marched back into the top five after starting in the rear in one of the first lap tangles. Watson managed to open a little breathing room over Hawkins as the pair opened a substantial lead over the rest of the field. Mills dropped Watkins to fifth with three to go and got by VanGorder on the final lap.

At the checkered it was Watson taking the win with Hawkins ending a solid run in second. Mills finished in the third spot with VanGorder fourth and Watkins rounding out the top five. Heats were won by Watson and VanGorder.

“I was pretty crazy out there in the beginning, said Watson. “I would like to thank my grandfather (Eugene Mills) for lending me a motor and keeping me up in points. We finally got our motor back this week.
