BOBBY WATKINS BECOMES 11TH DIFFERENT WINNER IN BIG BLOCK MODIFIEDS
By CHARLIE BROWN, DELMAR, DE - Saturday night was R.C. Holloway and AC Delco PSC Dealers Night at the Delaware International Speedway. It was a great night of racing with Bobby Watkins taking his first win of the season in the Big Block Modifieds. Donald Lingo, Jr. took the lead on the final turn when Ricky Elliott’s car lost power to win in the S.R. Pete & Sons Late Models and Curt Michael survived a last turn tangle to win in the United Racing Club Sprint cars. Rodney Cordrey returned to victory lane in the AC Delco PSC Modifieds while Billy Thompson scored his second win in the Crate Models and James Hill made it number nine in the Mod Lites.
In the 25-lap Big Block Modified feature Dave Dissinger looked like he had found a new home as he jumped out to the early lead driving Scott VanGorder’s backup car. Robert Dutton held down the second spot while Dale Hawkins ran in third. Matt Hawkins rolled to a stop on lap four bringing out the yellow. The restart was a wild one with cars pointed in all directions coming off the fourth turn but everyone managed to get straightened out and continue.
Mike White took over the third spot but two laps later the yellow was out again as Dale Hawkins slid to a stop with a broken front suspension. On the restart White’s car got hooked under the rear bumper of H.J. Bunting and the yellow was out again.
The rest of the race would be all green and the top five had changed dramatically. Bobby Watkins ended Dissinger’s bid by taking the lead on lap ten. Brad Trice followed into second and VanGorder climbed to third. Dutton was on the move from the rear of the field after a jump start penalty and was up to fourth by halfway.
Bunting was also making headway from the back and cracked the top five with ten to go. Watkins was able to open a little breathing room over Trice. With five to go Bunting took fourth and a lap later grabbed third from VanGorder. Watkins remained spot on and powered to his first win of the year and his second in the division. Bunting got by Trice on the final lap for second with VanGorder fourth and Dutton fifth. Heats were won by Trice and Dutton.
