RICKY ELLIOTT LEADS ALL 50 FOR $8065 LATE MODEL PAYDAY
Austin Hubbard started on the pole but it would be Ricky Elliott on the point when the first lap of the 50-lap S.R. Pete & Sons Super Late Model Championship was in the books. Rookie, Dylan Evans controlled third with Donald Lingo, Jr. quickly settling into fourth and Amanda Whaley fifth. On lap two Whaley lost power coming down the front straight and Ross Robinson made hard contact ending the night for both drivers.
On the restart Lingo got by Evans with Kenny Pettyjohn following into fourth. By lap nine the leaders were in traffic. Defending race champion Rob Schirmer headed to the pits on the twelfth circuit ending his chance for a repeat. Hubbard was looking for an opening to get by Elliott and shot to the bottom going into one when Elliott went to the high side of traffic. The move turned out to be a bad one as Hubbard tangled with Brandon Dennis bringing out the yellow and relegating him to the rear of the field.
On the restart, Kenny Pettyjohn, who was running in third got into the wall ending his day and bringing the yellow back out. It was now Elliott on top with Lingo second and Andrew Mullins getting by Evans on the restart for third. Evans continued to impress getting back by Mullins at the halfway sign as Mark Pettyjohn moved into the top five.
The order remained unchanged for the next 13 green flag laps before Devin Friese slowed with a flat bring out the yellow with 11 laps to go. On the restart Mullins began to slow and headed to the pits with a flat. Evans was now back in third behind Elliott and Lingo with Mark Pettyjohn third and Hubbard making it back into the top five.
With two laps to go Kelly Putz got around bringing out the yellow. On the restart Herb Tunis slowed with tire problems and Lingo slowed to a stop on the back straight and was pushed to the pits. Elliott never faltered as he cruised to the win with Evans ending a great run in second and Mark Pettyjohn third. Hubbard would finish in the fourth spot and Bryan Bernheisel finished as the last car on the lead lap in fifth.
Elliott had paid the gambler’s bonus earning him $7000 for the win plus $1015 in lap leader money and $50 from Carolyn Parsons for supporting breast cancer awareness for a whopping $8,065 payday. “We hit upon something at the end of the season and it worked on both of my cars,� said Elliott. “This is my favorite race of the season.�
