DIS Kicks Off 2021 Season With Quick Laps at Test & Tune

By TANNER HOLLIS, DELMAR, DE – On April 3, 2021, fans experienced a preview of the upcoming 2021 season at the Delaware International Speedway. Over 50 cars rolled through the gates of the legendary facility on Saturday Night, and throughout all three sessions for each division, we witnessed some quick lap times and introduced some new names in new divisions for the upcoming season.

 

The Rush Late Models had up to ten cars in their division for all three sessions. Former track champion, Joe Warren was the quickest across all sessions. He posted a best lap of 20.558 seconds in the second session. After a successful 2020 season in the Delmarva Chargers, Chris “Tippy� Martinez made the move to join the Rush Late Models in 2021, and fans got to see Tippy take his first laps in his Crate Late Model at DIS.

 

Twelve AC Delco PSC Modifieds were on hand, and Scott Hitchens was quickest is sessions one and two. In the third session, fans got to see Georgetown native, Zac Weller, post the quickest lap. The feat was a great showing for the driver of the1*, who moved during the off season from the Rush Late Model’s to the AC Delco Modifieds.

 

Delaware Dirt Modifieds took to the track for the first time in 2021, and fans got to witness H.J Bunting shake down in his brand new number 19 modified. Bunting was very fast during all three sessions, however times were not available due to the fact that there was no transponder on the car. It was the newcomer Matt Smith, that set fastest time in sessions one and three with his best lap time of the night coming in the third session at a 19.295 seconds. Kevin Sockriter was overall quickest in sessiontwo, and he posted the fastest time of the evening with a best time of at a 19.230.

 

After a hiatus from the sport, TJ Williams returned to circle track racing and was quickest in all three sessions of the Modified Lites.  In the second session, fans witnessed Brandon Dennis flip on the last lap. Fans held their breath for a moment when the car sparked a fire underneath the car, thankfully, Dennis was able to walk away unharmed and safety crews were able to tend to the car very quickly.

 

Five Little Lincolns and eight Vintage cars took laps during the night, however no times are recorded as these divisions do not run transponders for timing. Rounding out the three sessions and the evening was Mid-Atlantic Sprint Car series Driver CJ Faison. Faison was driving the Velveeta sponsored number two sprint car, and he posted his fastest lap of 18.256 at over 98 mph in the first session.

 

Delaware International will now sit idle until April 14th when we return for the $3,500 to win Rush Late Model Battle of the Bay Series. The series will begin at Delaware International Speedway for the Raelynn Huffman Memorial before heading to Georgetown Speedway, Potomac Speedway, and Winchester Speedway on consecutive nights. The Delaware Dirt Modifieds, Delaware Super Trucks and Little Lincolns will also be on hand, and the Delaware Dirt Modified’s will pay $2,000 to win. On April 27th, the Short Track Super Series will compete for $5,000 dollars in the iconic Diamond State 50. Stewart Friesen is the reigning champion of the race, and will look to defend his title in 2021. The 2021 Delaware International Speedway points season will begin with opening night, “Delmar Night� on May 1st.
