Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (July 18, 2018) – Robbie Price is returning to his roots this weekend as he climbs aboard a 600cc micro sprint to compete in the 34th annual Clay Cup Nationals at Deming Speedway.

The Clay Cup Nationals opens on Thursday and Friday with a pair of qualifying nights followed by main events on Saturday at the oval in Deming, Wash. The finale for the 600cc class will pay $10,000 to win and $500 to start. The format is similar to the Trophy Cup at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., where drivers earn event points each time they hit the track on qualifying nights and the main event on the final night is completely inverted by those points.

Price ran a micro sprint a handful of times last year, but the Clay Cup Nationals will mark the first time he has raced one of the 600cc-powered machines this year.

“I ran the Clay Cup for a number of years and came close a couple of times and never finished the deal so I’m hoping to do that this year,” he said. “I have a lot of laps at Deming (Speedway) so I’m going to run it like I did when I used to race there a lot.”

Having hopped back and forth between a sprint car and a micro in the past, Price knows the nuances that are needed when driving the smaller, less powerful machine.

“You are going a lot slower in a micro so it gives you more time to think about stuff,” he noted. “I’m definitely a little more aggressive in the micro than I am in anything else. Hopefully that will play into my results this weekend rather than hinder them. You have to be up on the wheel at all times with the format they run to get as many points as possible.”

Last weekend Price took part in the final two nights of Northwest Speedweek at Cottage Grove Speedway. On Friday night, he was 10th fastest in his group for time trials and finished second in a heat race. Bad luck befell the native of Cobble Hill, B.C., in the feature. He pulled off the track early and was credited with a 22nd-place finish.

In the finale of Speedweek last Saturday night Price was third fastest in his group during time trials and ran fifth in a heat race. Price started 12th in the main event and worked his way into the top 10 when more bad luck plagued him. This time it was in the form of a flat tire. He was credited as the 20th-place finisher.

“On the first night, I went to pull a tear-off and it stripped the post so I lost all my tear-offs and the track was pretty hooked up,” he said. “I did about two and a half laps wiping with my gloves and I decided it was better to just pull in. The second night we were pretty good and I fell off the track and cut a tire. We were up to sixth or seventh from 12th. We had really good speed both nights, just bad circumstances.”
