Dover, Johnson, Bubak score at Steve King Memorial

By DCRP (Dodge City, KS) -- The 2-day sprint car and midget special Steve King Memorial race welcomed nearly 70 competitors to Dodge City Raceway Park Friday night.

Feature winners included Kyler Johnson in the number 45x 305 sprint car; Rocky Mountain midget racer Jake Bubak in the 27B car and Jack Dover in the number 53 360 sprint car.

Johnson competed in all three classes Friday and was fast throughout: he won his heat for the 305s and was already heavy into his feature’s lap traffic by the sixth lap around the 3/4 mile clay oval. Koby Walters in the 33 car came in second, Jake Martens in the 27B car came in third, Taylor Velasquez in the 21x finished fourth and Chad Koch in the 22C finished fifth,

After winning his heat, Bubak went on to clinch a last-minute victory in the midget A Main when he advanced from the 5 starting position and overcame race leader 71 Zac Taylor in the last lap. The two were side-by-side for the last 5 laps. Taylor finished second, 45x Johnson third, 96 Cody Brewer finished fourth and 27 Keith Rauch finished fifth.

Dover started in the 2 spot and was the race leader for most of the 360 Sprint A Main, lapping traffic by the 9th revolution around the track. The yellow flag flew over Carson McCarl when his 27 car biked on him with 2 laps to go, causing him to hop the cushion and roll between turns 3 and 4. H e sustained no serious injuries. Dover maintained his lead after the restart and took home the trophy. 47x Dylan Westbrook came in second, 44 Chris Martin finished third, 67 JJ Hickle finished fourth and Bubak finished fifth in the 1x car.

By URSS (Dodge City, KS) -- – Drive to Zero POWRi United Rebel Sprint Series Presented by Mel Hameblton Ford Racing competitors took on night one of the Steve King Memorial at Dodge City Raceway Park on Friday night. Twenty-four cars were in attendance, but it was Quinter, Kansas’ Kyler Johnson crossing the checkers first.

Nebraska’s Chad Koch and Kyler Johnson set the pace for the 20-lap feature event. Johnson got off to the early lead on the first lap ahead of Koch, Koby Walters, and Jake Martens, but with one lap in the books the caution flew over the field. The restart was much of the same with the exception of Luke Cranston moving into fourth ahead of Martens.

Zach Blurton started a charge through the field early by advancing from eleventh throughout the top ten. Halfway through the race, Walters made a move ahead of Chad Koch to take over second while Jake Martens advanced into fourth over Cranston. Just two laps later, Martens moved into third ahead of Koch.

On lap 13, Jordan Knight secured the fifth running position over Cranston. With four laps remaining, Cranston would surrender another spot to Steven Richardson, falling back to seventh. With only two circuits left of Friday’s race, the caution flew yet again.

On the restart, Kyler Johnson nabbed ahead with the race lead yet again over Koby Walters, Jake Martens, Chad Koch, and Steven Richardson. By the cross of the checkers, the running order remained the same with Zach Blurton advancing two spots to finish seventh.
