Pokorski Motorsports tallies runner-up showing at Dodge County

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 12, 2016 – Six days after his car went up in flames with a header gasket failure while leading the A main at Plymouth, Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team tossed any lingering disappointment aside and broke through with a season-best second-place finish in Midwest Sprint Car Association A main competition at the Dodge County Fairgrounds Speedway in Beaver Dam Friday, July 8.

A total of 17 MSA 360 Sprint Cars signed in to take part in the first of three 2016 appearances at the giant, high-speed Dodge County Fairgrounds “Horsepower Half Mile,” in a companion event with the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series.

Pokorski drew the fourth starting position in the first MSA heat race. On the drop of the green flag, the West Bend driver slipped into third place before hitting the cushion hard, which allowed Donny Goeden to seize third.

Pokorski held down the fourth place spot for the remainder of the 8-lap race, closing slightly on the third place car of Chris Clayton over the final two laps. Lance Fassbender took the checkered flag in the first MSA heat race followed by Goeden in second.

The fourth place run in the first heat race put Pokorski on the inside of the second row to start the 20-lap A main event. On the opening lap, Pokorski held the fourth spot before Kurt Davis slipped past to push the 2014 MSA Masters Series champion back to fifth in the running order.

On lap 3, Pokorski got caught in the treacherous cushion, which allowed Danny Schlafer, Donny Goeden and Tim Haddy to move past. The miscue relegated Pokorski to eighth for the time being.

Three laps later, the first caution of the race appeared for a spin involving Lance Fassbender and Tony Wondra in turn four. On the restart, Donny Goeden and Tim Haddy made contact along the frontstretch, sending Haddy into the wall and Goeden flipping.

With Goeden and Haddy out of the race, Pokorski restarted the race sixth. Following the restart, Pokorski found his groove as he shot past Andrew Westphal with a low move in turn two before bolting past Chris Clayton in turn three to grab the fourth position.

The fourth and final caution flag came out on lap 12 when Kurt Davis lost a tire in turn one. Pokorski lined up for the restart third on the outside of the second place car of Danny Schlafer. When the race went green, Pokorski powered past Schlafer along the high groove to secure the runner-up spot.

Pokorski pulled away from Schlafer over the final eight laps, but he was unable to make a much of a dent on the lead held by Brandon McMullen, who went on to win the race in flag to flag fashion from the pole.

Pokorski, who charged from 18th to finish fourth in the team’s most recent appearance at Dodge County last September, was pleased with the second place effort.

“Things went very well for us throughout the night at Dodge County,” Pokorski said. “The car wasn’t quite as good as the last time we were there, but we were trying something different again, and it’s a different car.

“Dodge County is so different that anything else we run and because of the speed the car does goofy things,” he said. “Needless to say we were happy with the result.”

This Friday, July 15 will see the Pokorski Motorsports team return to the Manitowoc Speedway for the fifth of eight scheduled races at the team’s home track this season.

Pokorski is hoping to build on the speed combination the team found while competing in the Harbor Town Showdown with the IRA 410 series on July 1.

“We will definitely be running the same thing we had with the IRA on July 1st,” Pokorski said. “We’re looking forward to it for sure.”

Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car racing action is set to get underway at 7 p.m. this Friday, July 15 at the Manitowoc Speedway, which is located at 4921 Expo Drive in Manitowoc. For more information, visit www.manitowocspeedway.com
