Elliott Gets Highbanks Hustle Practice, Finishes Fourth
MARION, Ill. – In the midst of a standout 2016 racing campaign, Cottage Hills, Ill. driver Chad Elliott tacked on another pair of top-ten finishes against some of the Midwest’s top micro sprint drivers. Following an eighth-place run on Friday night Fayette County Speedway in Brownstown, Ill. with the POWRi Outlaw Micro Series, Elliott headed south to Southern Illinois Raceway in Marion, where he came away with fourth on Saturday.
A field of 20 micro sprints came out to compete at Fayette County, setting up three heat races. From outside row two in heat three, Elliott gained one position to finish in third on the wide-open quarter-mile oval.
Starting in ninth in the night’s 20-lap main event, Elliott was looking for any room to move forward. The lone caution of the race came early, where Elliott capitalized on the restart to move into eighth. It would be the only pass for position he’d be able to make, as the final 16 laps clicked off without interruption as the field spread out and Elliott took the checkered in eighth.
While POWRi traveled north to Macon Speedway, Elliott elected to go the opposite direction, to Southern Illinois Raceway in an effort to get in more practice for the upcoming Highbanks Hustle, which will pay a cool $7500 to the main event winner. Coming off a POWRi sixth-place run at SIR last weekend, Elliott was poised for another great finish this time around. With the count of 23 outlaw micros including some visitors from Indiana and Oklahoma also looking for HBH practice, Elliott would have to be on his “A” game. From the pole of his heat race, Elliott selected the wrong groove on the first lap and allowed one car to get by. He’d hold off the rest of the field and complete the preliminary race in second.
The 25-lap main event on the tricky eighth-mile oval would begin with Elliott eighth on the grid. Setting a quick pace throughout the event, he continued his strong season by rallying forward four positions en route to a fourth-place finish. “There were a lot of out-of-towners this weekend… I sliced and diced to the front and was still moving forward,” Elliott reviewed. “I’m feeling like I have a decent car for the Hustle.”
Elliott would like to thank Hammer & Steel, Berry Performance, JRE Performance, Phantom Racing Gear, and Competition Suspension Inc, as well as his family and all of his fans for their continued support.
Elliott is next scheduled to compete with the POWRi Outlaw Micro Series for their “Illinois SPEED Week” in the No. 65E 600cc micro sprint entry. The series of events begins at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville on June 8, and then continues on to Quincy Raceway, Jacksonville Speedway, Macon Speedway, and caps off at Lincoln Speedway on June 12.
