Can Faircloth Maintain Dominance Over Bombers?

There were glimpses of greatness for Curtis Faircloth last year at Five Flags Speedway.

As Mike Goraum dominated the Bombers division en route to the both the track and Snowball Derby titles, Faircloth managed to prove Goraum’s toughest challenge.

That is, when the Pace driver decided to race. Faircloth only ran a handful of features, but did take home a pair of checkered flags to briefly interrupt Goraum’s magnificent run of double-digit wins in an historic season.

Through two races in 2011, Faircloth seems to have picked up where Goraum left off. Faircloth has captured both features and taken full advantage of Goraum’s leap to the Sportsman class.

He looks to make it a hat trick when the Bombers return to the half-mile asphalt oval Friday night.

“I’ve exceeded my expectations so far this year, Faicloth said. “I thought there’d be four or five of us, running nose to tail all-year long.

That’s not to say he’s taken his success for granted.

Faircloth, whose 133 points is 23 ahead of Milton’s Brandon Burks, remembers leading the Derby early on last year before getting tangled with lapped traffic and forcing an unexpected end to his Derby dreams.

“I take it race by race and I don’t think about points when I race, Faircloth said. “We celebrate Friday and Saturday, and it’s right back to work Saturday evening on the car. We’re running for a championship this year. I know it can go south in a hurry.

That’s why he’s constantly making tweaks to his No. 7. In fact, Faircloth made two adjustments after his most recent win.

Faircloth never seems satisfied. If that’s not the ideal mark of a champion, then what is?

“I’m racing the same right now as I did last year, he said. “Get to the front, stay out front and that’s how I race. I’ll let the points fall where they may. I try to stay in that hunter’s mentality.

Sportsman and Super Stocks also will see action with the Allen Turner Pro Late Models owning the night’s premier event with the Elantra 100 — the first of five 100-lap races the Pro Lates will compete in this season.

Admission is as follows: $15 Adults; $14 Seniors/Military; $12 Students; $5 Child (6-11); Under 6 is Free.

Bombers Top 5 in Points—1. Curtis Faircloth, 133; 2. Brandon Burks, 110; 3. Gary Goodwin, 102; 4. Tally Warrick, 95; 5. Brian Lane, 94

Next race: Friday.
