Winslow Looks to Build on Opening Night Theatrics

Bubba Winslow had never been involved in a finish like this.

Sure, the Cantonment driver may be only 21, but he’s more than just a spring chicken around Five Flags Speedway. Winslow finished as the season runner-up in the Sportsman division last year before moving up to Super Stocks for 2011.

Still, when it came to the exciting end of the Super Stocks’ season opener March 25, Winslow found himself in uncharted waters.

“We had some pretty good finishes last year, but that was definitely a nail-biter, he said.

To say the least. Winslow was just happy to come out on the right side of a photo finish that saw him clip Jesse Reid at the line.

He hopes it won’t be nearly that tight when the Super Stocks return to Five Flags on Friday night.

Sportsman and Bombers also will see action with the Allen Turner Pro Late Models owning the night’s premier event with the Elantra 100 — the first of five 100 lap races the Pro Lates will compete in this season.

Admission is as follows: $15 Adults; $14 Seniors/Military; $12 Students; $5 Child (6-11); Under 6 is Free.

Winslow and Reid’s finish was so close, fans in the stands and in the pits weren’t exactly sure whose checkered flag it was. Even the announcers had to check with track officials before announcing Winslow the victor.

Reid even demanded to see video evidence later in the tower.

“We had a pretty good car the whole night, Winslow said. “We got schooled on the restarts against veterans like Jesse and Shannon Jackson. Luckily, we’re able to catch back up.

Winslow made his move on the final two laps and got up to Reid’s door coming out of Turn 4 as the flagman began to wave the checkered wildly.

Winslow shoved the throttle down and won, albeit barely, his inaugural Super Stocks race.

“It meant a lot to us, not just me, but my whole team, he said. “I think it meant just as much to me as to them and my dad (Aubrey).

“You gotta be on top of everything, not just the feature. Qualifying and heat races, you have to take full advantage of every opportunity to create as many points as you can.

Super Stocks—1. Bubba Winslow, 50; 2. Jessie Reid, 47; 3. Shannon Jackson, 44; 4. John Shuffler, 41; 5. Randy Thompson, 38

Next race: Friday.
