All Thompson Does is Win, Win, Win

Growing up with a father who owned his own garage, Randy Thompson was used to working on cars.

For him it was no sweat, as a teenager, helping the Tracy Goodsons and Junior Niedeckens of the world turn wrenches on their Late Models at Five Flags Speedway.

Finally in 2002, though, Thompson decided to turn a wheel instead of a wrench.

The rest, as they say, is history. Thompson is one of the more accomplished local drivers to grace the half-mile asphalt oval in recent years.

The nearby Cantonment native, whose dad owns Tim’s Automotive, has won four consecutive track titles, including his first in the Super Stocks series last season.

Thompson, 32, continues defense of his current crown and the drive for five next Friday when the Super Stocks race a 50 lapper at Five Flags.

“It means a lot, especially competing out there,� he said of his quartet of championships. “There are a lotta good cars and a lotta other people put more money into it, so that makes you feel a lot better.�

So do those crowns.

Thompson won three straight Sportsman series titles from to 2007 to 2009, completely dominating one of the more competitive classes at Five Flags.

“That was pretty special,� he said. “Just to win one championship was hard to do. Two was even harder. Everything just fell together. To win all three, that’s a big accomplishment. It’ll be hard to beat.�

Thompson attempted to win dual titles in both the Sportsman and Super Stock divisions last year, but came up short in his bid.

He has yet to run both classes at Five Flags this season because Thompson and his team had to rebuild his Super Stock No. 42 from “the ground up.� But he anticipates giving both series a shot here shortly.

That’s not hard to believe from a driver who loves seeing his labor of love pay off with unparalleled success.

“I don’t know how to describe it,� Thompson said. “Working out here, getting aggravated, frustrated, wondering if it’s all worth it during all these long nights. When you do put in the hard work and win, it means a lot to you. It makes you feel good to know you can outrun everybody.�
