Texan Casey Smith Readies For 47th Annual Snowball Derby

casey_smith_carAustin, TX 11/26/14 – It has been a frustrating year for Casey Smith and his Casey Smith Racing team, it’s not so much that they have not ran well, but the fact that a couple of mechanical failures and accidents have kept the 2013 Central Texas Speedway and San Antonio Speedway track champion out of victory lane and out of the Southern Super Series championship hunt.

Even with missing most of the second half of the season, Smith finished 10th in the final point standings at the end of the year, with one common thread throughout the season, he’s ran very well at 5 Flags Speedway all season long, a fact that may come into play in the biggest short track race of the season, the 47th Annual Snowball Derby.

“We’ve been one of the fastest cars all year long at Pensacola, said Smith. “We just haven’t gotten to victory lane yet, but we just came back from a test there and it went really well. Our was good on the longer run which usually is the case, and we struggle a bit in qualifying trip but I think we found some speed in that department as well. I think we’ll have a piece that can compete no doubt.

The Snowball Derby is the most prestigious super late model short track race in the country with drivers from as far as California and Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada entered to try and secure a starting spot in the field. A few notable names entered in this year’s Derby include 2014 ARCA champion  Mason Mingus, NASCAR Camping World Series winner and two time Derby winner Eric Jones, and the 2014 NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion Chase Elliott among others.

“Winning this race will put you in a special class with the competition that’s involved, said Smith. “It’s all about writing your name in the history books for this one. People can’t tell you who finished second in the race the last year, but they sure know who won it. We feel confident that we will be in the mix this year, we’ve had a fast car all year there.

So far 67 drivers have entered the 2014 edition of the Snowball Derby, with 80 entered into the Snowflake 100 which runs Saturday night. Action kicks off next Wednesday at Five Flags Speedway and continues through Sunday’s 2pm running of the Derby.
