Grill In the Right Frame of Mind for Snowball Derby Triple
November 12, 2015 • App, Archives, Late Models, Snowball Derby
2015 has not been the best of years for two-time Snowball Derby winner Augie Grill. Perhaps that’s a good thing heading into the 48th annual Snowball Derby on December 6. Despite only a handful of races run this season, Grill heads to Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida with the mind frame of winning.
“I like where we are right now, said Grill. “I think we have hit on a few things here recently and that will have us ready for the Snowball come December. We have only run like nine races this year with me driving, but I have been at the track with our Grand American Race Car customers so we have notes to go on.
Last year Grill put to bed a five-season string of bad luck that saw the Hayden, Alabama driver fail to finish better than 28thin the prestigious race held at Five Flags Speedway (FL). Over the course of that five year span he only completed 33-percent of the laps run.
“It was not the finish that we wanted, but it was a finish, said Grill. “It was tough there for a few year with all the problems, bad luck, misfortunes and having that happen sometimes with really fast race cars was hard to swallow.
Although he has pulled double-duty before on Snowball Derby weekend, Grill has plans to pull triple-duty this time around as he will also enter the Modified feature on Friday night and the Allen Turner Snowflake 100 on Saturday night.
Grill has two wins in the Snowflake 100 in 2009 and 2011. He also broke the track record last year during Pro Late Model qualifying with a lap of 16.259. That earned him the pole and he led 72 laps before having mechanical problems.
“The exhaust pipe came loose and we had to park it, said Grill. “Hopefully we can run as well as we did last year. The record we set was perfect weather conditions. If that gets beat I’ll take my hat off to them.
In addition to Grill being a two-time winner, his chassis’ have won the last six Snowflake 100′s with the likes of Grill, Chase Elliott and Bubba Pollard.
“I really don’t know how to explain that, added Grill. “It shows our cars run well with all types of motors and we have been really good in the flake.
The 48th Annual Snowball Derby weekend kicks off with the Cat Country/WEAR-TV3 Green Flag Party on Wednesday, December 2. On-track activities start Thursday, December 3, for the opening practice rounds for the Snowball Derby Super Late Models and Snowflake 100 Pro Late Models. The Five Flags Butler U-Pull-It Bombers and Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Sportsman divisions will also have feature events on Snowball Derby Thursday.
The top Snowball Derby starting spots will be set on Friday, December 4 during WXBM 102.7 Pole Night at Five Flags. The Five Flags Faith Chapel Super Stocks and Modifieds will also battle in their Snowball Derby features after Super Late Model qualifying.
The Allen Turner Hyundai Snowflake 100 takes center stage on Saturday, December 5 as the top Pro Late Model racers in the country qualify and battle for 100 laps at Five Flags. In addition, Saturday’s action features the final 50-lap qualifying event for Snowball Derby drivers to make one last effort to qualify for the 300-lap Super Late Model race. The Better Built Tool Box Pro Trucks will also have a 50-lap feature on Snowball Derby Saturday.
