Courtney wraps up All Star title with 1st Fremont win to open Jim & Joanne Ford Classic
By Brian Liskai (Fremont, OH) -- Tyler Courtney essentially wrapped up the 2022 Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 title with his first ever Fremont Speedway win Friday, Oct. 7 to open the 15th Annual Jim and Joanne Ford Classic on Custom Metal Works Night.
Courtney, from Indianapolis, Indiana, led all 35 laps for his eighth All Star win of 2022 and the 16th series win of his career. By taking a green flag in qualifying on Saturday, Oct. 8, “Sunshine” will score his second straight All Star title. His win aboard the Clauson/Marshall Racing #7BC Friday was worth $6,000 and came on the series’ 132nd appearance at “The Track That Action Built.”

“I just kept moving the wing back and trying to get traction. Track stayed better tonight…better than it normally does and early in the night we were a little too tight but we didn’t want to free it up because this place just gets slicker as the night goes on. So just trying to stay a step ahead of it is tough. I think before this year and speedweek one of our best finishes here was like eighth or ninth so to come in here at speedweek and run two top fives and then show up here on finale weekend and get a win is just awesome. That’s a lot about my guys and how hard they work. In the off-season and throughout the year they keep making our program better,” said Courtney beside his Nos Energy Drink/ZMAX/Elliott’s Custom Trailers and Carts backed machine.
“We have Lauren here from Nos Energy Drink. Without her we don’t get to go up and down the road. My brother is home with his wife and new daughter and I’m going there Monday to spend the week with them….my first niece and their first daughter so it’s going to be a cool experience to share with them,” added Courtney.
Second place finisher Justin Peck came on strong the last half of the race.
“We got the fuel load burned down and got the wing back. I told my guys I was going to have to move around and if I can find a line that works I have a shot at the win. I really couldn’t find one…found a little bit of one there when we caught traffic but it seemed to go away pretty fast. Yesterday I said I wanted to finish two steps forward tonight and it was one so hopefully tomorrow we get that other step,” said Peck beside his Coastal Race Parts/Big Spring Car Wash/High Performance Lubricants/HP Engines/RPM Chassis/Speed Toys backed #13.
For Henry, since joining the Rich Farmer team, he has scored a pair of podium finishes at Fremont.
“The past two races we’ve been in this I’ve just been trying to learn. The first week was really good and the second week was mediocre. Tonight we were decent but not as good as Tyler and Justin. I’m really proud of my guys, Rich and Sheldon and Zack and everyone involved with this 29X car and thankful for everyone that has stuck with me through all this the past few weeks,” said Sabo beside his NAPA Auto Parts/Valvoline Oil/Level Utilities/Limo Scene Limo Services/Kiser Sound backed machine.
Courtney built a sizeable lead until entering heavy lapped traffic on lap 10. That allowed Cap Henry and Cale Thomas to close. The feature’s only caution flew on lap 20 and gave Courtney the clear track he needed as he pulled away to a nearly three second lead while Henry, Thomas and Justin Peck waged a great battle for second.
Thomas took second on the restart with Henry and Peck right on his bumper. Henry regained the runner-up spot on lap 23 but Peck took it away two laps later.
Courtney found lapped traffic again with four laps to go but was able to negotiate through for the win over Peck, Henry, Cole Duncan and Zeth Sabo who scored his first All Star top five finish.
The Burmeister Trophy Dirt Trucks ran two feature events, with the field split odds and evens in the track’s points.
In the first 15-lap feature Fremont’s 2022 track champion Jamie Miller took the lead from Shawn Valenti on lap four and drove to his sixth truck win of the season and the 37th overall win of his career at the track. Valenti, Dan Hennig, Brad Stuckey and Kent Brewer rounded out the top five.
“I like it when the track has this much bite in it. I struggle on slick tracks so this was perfect,” said Miller beside his Fostoria Mod Shop backed #4m.
In the second feature, Jeff Babcock and Dave Gumby Jr. battled side by side the first six laps before Gumby suffered mechanical issues. Babcock drove away to the win and after a tremendous battle for second, Chester Fitch secured the position with Brad Mitten, Keith Sorg and Dustin Keegan rounding out the top five.
“That was a lot of fun racing with Dave. Thanks to all the fans for coming out and I hope everyone has some beer and a good time this weekend,” said Babcock of his Roelle Racing backed #25.
The 15th Annual Jim and Joanne Ford Classic wraps up Saturday, Oct. 8 with the Tezos All Stars battling for $10,000 to win. The Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints will be split into odds and evens in points to run a pair of feature events. Gates will open at 3 p.m. and racing has been moved up to 6 p.m.
