Brady Bacon – Win at Home of the Hoffman’s!

(Bill W) July 14, 2015 – Brady Bacon and the Hoffman Racing #69 team scored the $5,000 win at Lawrenceburg Speedway on Sunday night at the third leg of USAC Indiana Sprintweek. Lawrenceburg is just across the border from the Hoffman’s hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. It was the team’s second win there this year, but first with USAC. In other Sprintweek action, Brady charged from 19th to ninth at Gas City, and Kokomo Speedway was postponed to late August. Indiana Sprintweek is back in action Wednesday night in Terre Haute, before moving on to Putnamville Thursday, Bloomington Friday and Haubstadt Saturday.

The luck of the draw hurt Brady at Gas City on Friday. “We were really good at Gas City, but we drew the last pill for qualifying (46th),” he says. “That’s never good at Gas City during Sprintweek. The sun hits the track so hard. Timing 21st was actually decent for where we went out.”

The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver won his heat. “We made it out of the heat and we started nineteenth in the feature,” says Brady. “It was a really rough and narrow racetrack. We were able to get up to ninth. The car was really good and we were able to move around more than most people. The Hoffman’s have been working really hard to get things turned around. We made a couple changes and they seem to be working.”

They did get time trials and the heat races in at Kokomo on Saturday before the rains came. “We were really good at Kokomo,” says Brady. “We went out second to last to qualify, and despite the track slowing down, we were second quick. We had a car capable of quick time if we’d been in the front half of the field.”

As usual during Sprintweek, the heat was stacked. Brady went from sixth to second. “We had a tough heat race,” he says. “I think Dave Darland, Tracy Hines, Robert Ballou, Kyle Cummins and Max McGhee were all in the first three rows. Finishing second gave us some confidence. We were excited for the feature, but we’ll have to wait until the end of August for that. It helped keep our momentum going into Lawrenceburg.”

Coming out late again in qualifying at Lawrenceburg Sunday, Brady laid down second quick. “We had a really good car in qualifying and got beat by one-thousandth of a second,” he says. “That was a little disappointing. I think we’ll get a few more quick times coming up.”

Some of the same heat race foes were on the high banks at Lawrenceburg. “It was another really tough heat race,” says Brady. “Dave Darland was in there again, Robert Ballou, Tracy Hines and Kyle Cummins. We were able to get up to third in that (from sixth), and that felt good.”

Starting sixth in the feature, Brady got off to a quick start. “The car was really good in the feature,” he says. “We got to second really fast. It took us a few laps to get by (Aaron) Farney. Once we got there, we cruised until we got to lapped traffic. Robert was right there.”

That’s when the race was decided. “The cars were side by side in front of us and we didn’t have anywhere to go,” says Brady. “One of them bobbled and I ran over him. Robert passed me, but he slid up the racetrack. I was able to get back by Robert and the lapped car at that point. We were able to hold on through the rest of the lapped traffic and win it.”

Brady and the Hoffman Racing team are ready for the rest of the week and hoping for their first Indiana Sprintweek title together. “It seems like we have a little more speed,” says Brady. “We had a frustrating few races, but things seemed to have turned around. Terre Haute is always a good track for us. Putnamville is a track we’ve struggled at. I think we’ve made the changes we need and we’ll be better than we were last time.”
