ANDERSON POSTS $3,000 DIRT CAPITOL LATE MODEL WIN

HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 30) - Andy Anderson became the third different leader in the $3,000 to win Late Model event at Hagerstown Speedway/Dirt Capitol on J.G. Cochran Auctioneer Night while becoming the 12th different winner this season. It also was a career 19th triumph at Hagerstown triumph and first since June 2009 for the Bunker Hill, WV driver.
“I’ve picked up wins just about everywhere with Jack Bland, except for here,” Anderson said. “We’ve come up short two or three times this year. I’m just glad he gave me the opportunity to run late models.”
Justin Weaver reclaimed the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic Late Model Sportsman lead and led the final two laps of the Small Car Qualifier to guarantee a starting spot in the Nationals in two weeks. It was his fourth win of the season.
Another small car qualifying event winner was Mike Corbin in the K. Lynn Management Pure Stocks but as he won a qualifier earlier in the year, second place Darrin Younker was given the qualifying position. The win was Corbin’s 12th of the season. Jason Sarver’s second consecutive win was the qualifier for the Mason Dixon Auto Auction Hobby Stocks while Frankie Gordon’s first ever Hagerstown win was the Cochran Associates Four Cylinder qualifier.
Gary Stuhler charged around the topside of turn two to speed away with the Late Model lead over Trever Feathers with Steve Axtell Jr. advancing from fifth into the runner up spot following a third lap restart.
Following the caution, Stuhler continued to set the pace while Axtell, Feathers and Andy Anderson were battling for the next positions as Axtell closed on Stuhler to get under and take the top spot on the 11th circuit.
Anderson got under Stuhler on the 15th spot and lined up the challengers behind him, Feathers, Stuhler and Kyle Hardy who had closed on front runners after coming from ninth.
With the green flag still waving, Anderson saw an opportunity as they were going into the rear cars and charged around the top of turn four when Axtell got slowed behind one as Anderson went ahead on the 28th lap. Axtell rebounded quickly but Anderson saw $3,000 dollar signs and sped past the checkered by .235 second to the good. Feathers ended third with Stuhler and Hardy next. Feathers and Stuhler were the heat winners.
“I was in the right place at the right time,” Anderson said. “I was running the top and he got around me on the bottom and I knew the bottom was way better. I moved up in the middle of the race and could run with him a little bit but then he got away from me. I had to get back to the bottom. I run him back down and then I just played the lapped car in my favor.”
The Late Model Sportsman feature went off with a four car invert with Kyle Lee taking charge from the outside over Jeff King, Justin Weaver and Chad Myers. Weaver moved into the runner up spot on the fourth lap while Lee was out front nearly a half straightaway. Lee had to surrender the advantage when the caution was displayed on lap 13 and Paul Cursey quickly grabbed the lead but Weaver was on the gas and pulled past him to lead the 15th lap while Scott Palmer was up from 13th and passed Cursey when another yellow came out with three to go. Palmer grabbed the lead as Weaver again went on offense and came back to lead the final two and hold Palmer off by .565 seconds. Lee held onto the third position over Cursey and Charlie Schaffer who came from 14th.
“I just made the passes at the right time,” Weaver said. “This thing was awesome on the bottom. I knew Scott has been fast for weeks. I knew if I could stay to his door and getting up off the corner this thing was so good, we could hang in there. I had to get up on the wheel the last couple laps.”
Myers, Cursey and Lee were the heat winners.
With four Pure Stocks inverted, Mike Corbin sped from the outside pole ahead of Dave Brown and Darrin Younker. Brian Walls moved into the runner up spot following a sixth lap restart and Younker claimed the position following a ninth lap restart. Younker kept the pressure on Corbin but settled for second by three lengths with Walls, Jamie Zentmyer and David Kaiser completing the top five. Zentmyer, Younker and Corbin were the heat winners.
In a four car invert, Kenny Thomas pulled out to lead Bryan Neff in the Hobby Stock feature while Justin Sarver moved into third on the sixth lap. On an eleventh lap restart, the front three went three wide from the second turn to exiting the fourth turn as Thomas got shoved up the track and lost six positions with Sarver pulling from the low side into the lead over Neff. A one lap shootout settled the outcome as Sarver took the won over Gary Proctor by a mere .151 second. Jamie Mills, Neff and Thomas were next. Sarver and Dwayne Snyder were the heat winners.
Frankie Gordon charged out of the third position in the Four Cylinders and ahead of Matt Williamson as Ryan Laye advanced from seventh to third by the third lap. He ran Williamson down to claim the runner up position on lap seven and then put Gordon in his sights and closed to two lengths at the checkered. Williamson, Bill Kessler and Michael Warrenfeltz were next.
