Dylan Cappello’s Havasu Results Not Indicative of Performance

26 Promotions – Lake Havasu City, AZ – (November 3rd, 2017) – After a wreck ended his night early at Madera Speedway earlier in October, Dylan Cappello entered Havasu 95 Speedway looking to secure the second position in the standings as the championship portion of the Lucas Oil Modified Series came to a close.
“The weekend started out rough on Friday night, we spent the first practice diagnosing a miss in the engine that we found out was caused by a broken spark plug. Then the next practice, a throttle linkage adjustment was made,” said Cappello. “Both of these adjustments took time to fix and once everything was figured out, on old tires, we were about a tenth off from where we wanted to be. At the very end of the night, new tires were bolted on and we jumped to second on the board. It was good to know that on newer tires we had good speed.”
Saturday’s practice session was spent focusing on qualifying, something the team has struggled with a bit in recent races.
“After two mock qualifying runs, I was confident in our car,” he said. “For the past couple races, I feel we have been slightly missing on our qualifying setup and driver execution could also be much better. This problem surfaced again after a tenth-place qualifying position.”
Starting mid-pack, Cappello knew making his way to the front wasn’t going to be easy.
“We put trust in our race setup and went to work,” he said. “With a long green flag run from the beginning, the field spread out and catching cars was hard to do, by the first caution, we were up to eighth and then found ourselves stuck in seventh. On multiple restarts, it seemed as if the choose cone wasn’t working to our advantage. With laps winding down, drivers, including myself, began to make some more aggressive moves towards the front. After contact directly in front of me, we were involved in a wreck coming off of turn four.”
Cappello’s crew quickly went to work following the incident to replace the two right side tires that were flat and bent, Cappello then joined the tail of the field on the restart.
“With new tires on a very slick race track, I was able to pass multiple cars a lap and found myself in a top five situation with ten laps to go,” he explained. “A last lap pass allowed us to cross the line in third. After the race, a call was made that we worked on the car under a red flag condition and the penalty resulted in a twelfth-place finish. It was disappointing, to say the least after the whole team never quit and battled all the way up to the checkered flag. Thank you so much to the RBK Racing crew for believing in me and never giving up the whole weekend.”
Cappello ends the championship season second in Lucas Oil Modified Series points, he returns to action for the final race of the year on November 18th for the Spray Nine Race of Champions at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
