Champions Crowned at Humboldt Speedway

Humboldt Speedway
On a Championship night that saw passion, fury and raw emotion, titles were handed out in all five classes at NASCAR’s 3/8 mile Humboldt Speedway. In Ray’s Metal Depot B Modified action, an unlikely winner arrived in McCarthy Auto Group Victory Lane. Rio Rancho, New Mexico’s Josh Cain found himself without a motor after losing an engine competing at Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa the previous evening. Locating one in Southeast Kansas, installing the power-plant during the day and racing at Humboldt Speedway in the evening proved to be worthwhile as Cain out-dueled Urbana, Missouri’s Dillon McCowan and Luke Phillips for the win. Points leader Andy Bryant, from Ft. Scott rebounded from a poor Heat Race to finish 14th, enough to secure the Track Championship for the 2019 Season. Heat Race wins went to Chanute’s Mike Letterman, Luke Phillips and McCowan.
Love’s Travel Stops Midwest Modifieds saw Sparta, Missouri’s Rob Muilenburg pick up his 10th win on the initial season for the class and secure the inaugural Track Championship for the 2019 season. Muilenburg held off Ryan Smith and Mike Churning for the win. Heat Race wins went to Muilenburg and Chanute’s Braden Bowman, his first of his career.
In one of the evening's most dramatic finales, the Home Savings Bank Factory Stocks, Chanute’s Jon Westhoff took the A Feature and in doing so took the Track Championship. Westhoff, entering the night in third place 18 points behind leader Derrek Wilson. An opening lap incident would send Wilson to the rear and second place Jacob Ellison to the pits giving Westhoff the opportunity to strike. Westhoff held off Scott Collins and Ethan Vance while Wilson could only muster sixth, not enough to surpass the winning effort of Westhoff. Westhoff was crowned Track Champion for the 2019 Season by 1 point.
Tempers flared in the Tumbleweed Music Festival Street Stocks, opening the door for Cleveland, Missouri’s Devin Irvin who entered the night trailing Collinsville, Oklahoma’s Dalton Garrison in points. Humboldt’s Nick Fritch, who entered the evening in third place, had contact with Garrison as the two battled for position mid race. Their cars would lock, ending both drivers night as tempers flared both were disqualified for the race. Humboldt’s Dan Daniels would lead the remainder of the race, picking up his first win of the year. Irvin, rallied for a 4th Place finish, earning the Track Championship for 2019.
O’Reilly Auto Parts Sport Compact had drama from the drop of the flag in the Heat Races. Points leader Barry Luthi, from Overbrook, Kansas, got tangled up on the start and suffered damage that would keep him out of the nights A Feature, which turned out to be one of the most dramatic finishes on the year. Nortonville’s Devin Schmidt seemed to have the A Feature sealed, but disaster struck coming to the checkers as his car took a hard right towards the wall. LaHarpe’s Rick Andres capitalized on Schmidt’s misfortune and squeezed by lapped traffic and edged out Earlton’s Allen Jesseph for the victory. Fortunately for Luthi, his points lead was strong enough to maintain his lead and the Track Championship for 2019.
USRA Modifieds sponsored by McCarthy Auto Group raced for the final time at Humboldt Season and Nevada, Missouri’s Chase Domer used his pole position starting spot and held off three-time winner Matt Johnson for the A Feature win. Johnson, starting 12th, gained spots until he closed to the bumper of Domer in the races closing laps. Domer, held off Johnson for the emotional win. Johnson, Cody Jolly, Josh Cain and Paden Phillips rounded out the top five.
Annual Powder Puff races were contested following the evenings A features. Winners were Lexi Kidwell in Sports Compacts, Ravyn Whitworth in B Mods and Tera McGowen in Midwest Mods.
Humboldt Speedway would like to thank the fans and sponsors for making the 2019 Season a memorable one and hope to see them as the season opens in 2020.
