Dixon, Weber & Belken take Mid-Season Championships at I-55! Pevely, MO (July 20, 2002) Ed Dixon led all twenty-five laps on the UMP Late Model main event to claim the mid-season championship. Dixon jumped out to the early lead from his front row starting spot and only faced a couple of challenge early on in the event. Jim Durbin challenged Dixon early on for the lead, but Dixon was able to get away until an early caution. On the restart, Danny Haynes mounted a challenge for the lead using the low side, but again Dixon was able to open up a small lead. During the middle of the race, Justin Allgaier made his move toward the front, making it to third place before his engine let go down the backstretch, littering the track with connecting rods and other engine parts. Dave Jumper had nowhere to go and ran into the back of Allgaier, ending his night as well. Steve Shive then made a late race charge, moving from seventh place on the restart to finish second. Danny Haynes kept his great run around the bottom to finish third. Jim Durbin was fourth and Brian Wolfmeier rounded out the top five. The UMP Modified had a bit of a bazaar twist; Dean Hoffman got the lead on the start with Scott Weber falling in behind him and giving chase. Hoffman led the first eighteen laps with Weber right on his bumper. As they came into heavy lapped traffic, Weber and Hoffman were side-by-side with Hoffman jumping the cushion and scraping the wall in turn four. The impact knocked loose a large section of the rear deck from Hoffman?s car bringing out the caution. Hoffman was sent to the infield for repairs. Weber pulled away on the restart to take the win. Rich Whaley made a last lap pass on Rusty Griffaw to take second. Jerry Grither was fourth and Brent Mullins fifth. Paul Belken continues to rack up feature wins in the AARA Sportsman division. Belken led all fifteen laps enroute to the win. Ricky Horton had another impressive run to finish second, Scott Stuppy was third, Mark Blanke fourth and Jim Troutman fifth.
