Pevely, MO (May 15, 2004) Two inches of rain just 24 hours earlier and cool temperatures provided a very fast surface around the high banked I-55 Raceway. A huge field of 122 racecars field the pit area to provide the fast paced action. Twenty-nine U.M.P. (United Midwestern Promoters) Late Model were on hand and Randy Korte of Highland, IL found the right combination and simply dominated the feature event. Korte led every lap and would pull away to a comfortable lead after each restart. The event was plagued with several cautions allowing only twelve of the original twenty-four starters to finish the event. Two starters failed to take the green on the original start, John Lansford broke on the pace lap and Roger Brickler lost a right rear tire on the pace, although he would return back to the event after missing the first few laps. Mark Voigt was on the move toward the front early in the event, but he encountered left front suspension damage after contact with Clay Baumann which ended Voigt's night. Dean Motsinger and Tait Davenport crashed into the turn two inside wall and ended the action for both cars. Brent Kreke and Steve Sheppard made contact near the same spot a few laps later which ended their night. Ed Dixon suffered a blown head gasket half way through the event. Matt Taylor had an impressive run for the second straight week at I-55 Raceway, as he worked his way up to finish second in the main event. Jeff Johns had his best run all season as he battled with Taylor and came home third. Danny Haynes crossed the line fourth in the main event after picking up a qualifying heat win earlier in the evening. Clay Baumann completed the top five as he also ran up near the front of the pack all evening long. The U.M.P. Modified division had a huge turn out of cars as some fourty-four cars checked in at the gate. Bobby Bittle, known as the "Belleville Bullet", got out his broom and swept the night's events. Dave Wibbenmeyer did slow roll over in turn two after getting into the outside wall, while at the same time the three cars running in the top five crashed in turn three. That crash involved Brian Worley, Scott Weber and Dean Hoffman and ended the night for Weber and Hoffman. Wibbenmeyer was uninjured and Worley got his starting spot back as the caution was displayed for Wibbenmeyer's accident. Worley would recover and come back to take second place in the main event. Bobby Martintoni made a rare appearance at I-55 Raceway and had a strong performance as he took third place in the main event. Dennis Richards recovered from contact with Chris Simmerman on the first lap and finished fourth. Jim Shereck, who had to change a left front tire during the red flag for Wibbenmeyer's accident after contact with Mark Miner powered his way to fifth. Ricky Horton took his second straight AARA Sportsman feature win. Horton pulled away from Scott Stuppy who ran in second place for the first fourteen laps until Paul Belken made a move in lapped traffic to take second place on the final lap. Stuppy settled for third. Ed Lowry moved up from the eighth starting position to take fourth. Troy Naeger came home in the fifth position and claimed the Missouri/Illinois Dodge Dealers Hard Charger Award after starting in the twelfth position. Naeger, who happens to drive a Dodge Intrepid in the Sportsman division, gets a $200 bonus for being the hard charger. Don Hoffman overtook Homer Mooney on the final lap of the AARA Pro 4 Stock main event after Mooney lost a tire. Mooney appeared to be on his way to an easy win before losing the tire. Mooney dropped all the way to fourth as Pat Brewer and Jim McCumminsky also beat him to the checkered flag. Dave Heinrichs rounded out the top five.
