Taylor Turns to Backup Midget for Sixth-Place Finish Before Testing Asphalt Modified

Inside Line Promotions – PUEBLO, Colo. (June 20, 2018) – Zac Taylor was forced to bring out “old reliable” last Saturday after continuing engine problems forced the Todd Henry midget team to shelve the main car.

It paid off with a sixth-place run at I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan, Colo. Taylor then switched gears on Sunday when he tested an asphalt modified at I-25 Speedway for the first time.

The busy weekend began on Friday, when Taylor headed to Thomas County Speedway in Colby, Kan., to compete with the Lucas Oil POWRi Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association. Unfortunately, the team fought engine woes all night. Taylor made a lap in the A Main and pulled in.

“Todd has spent a ton of money trying to figure this out, replacing the entire electrical and ignition system and it still won’t run,” he said. “So he went home and got the old car with an old Ford engine. It’s older than me, but it ran well Saturday at I-76 Speedway (in Fort Morgan, Colo.). We won the heat and in the feature drove from eighth up to third. I ran third most of the race and fell back to sixth toward the end.

“Todd’s going to pull the Mopar out of the main car and take it to the engine builders. We think we have it narrowed down to some type of a fueling issue.”
Taylor buckled into a full-bodied modified on Sunday for testing at I-25 Speedway, a high-banked quarter-mile paved oval.

“When we got there the owner told me to take it easy for 25 laps to get a feel,” he said. “After about 10 laps he told my dad it looked like I had raced the car before and turned me loose. At first I was about four-tenths slower than the guy who had won the night before. By the end of the practice I was two-tenths quicker than the previous night’s winner.”

Taylor said he is taking the coming weekend off and will compete in the modified at I-25 Speedway on June 30.

“We were going to put the 305 engine back in our sprint car, but with how well we’ve run with the 360 we are going to sell the 305 and use the money to improve our 360 motor,” he said.
