Taylor Scores Another Non-Wing Win and Runs Second in Midget
Inside Line Promotions – FORT MORGAN, Colo. (May 22, 2019) – Coming into the 2019 season Zac Taylor had never driven a non-wing sprint car. In three starts thus far he has two wins and a second-place finish, including a victory last Saturday at I-76 Speedway.
And if that’s not enough, Taylor also scored a runner-up result in the POWRi Lucas Oil Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association event the same night.
“My dad and I have learned so much in the past couple of weeks with the non-wing car and Todd has been incredible in that learning curve,” Taylor said. “We are talking about going to Indiana with both the sprint car and midget and trying our luck. I think there’s not much more we can learn around our neck of the woods. We need to go where the competition is the best. We will probably get our butts kicked, but that’s how you get better.”
Taylor won a non-wing heat race before he took the lead on the second lap of the POWRi Lucas Oil Warrior Sprint Series feature and never looked back.
“Dad had the car so good and I felt so comfortable,” he said. “I think the midget has given me the knowledge and the feel of what I need – the confidence I have acquired.”
In his first start in Todd Henry’s midget since the Chili Bowl Nationals in January, Taylor charged from fifth to third in his heat race and he led most of the feature before finishing second.
“A lapped car kind of hung me up,” he said. “I went low and the second-place car went high and that was pretty much it. I really think the midget has helped me with what I’m doing in the non-wing sprint car. It’s taught me how to feel a car react and feel comfortable. The feel of a midget and a non-wing sprint car is almost the same. You drive both into the corner the same. You need to hit your marks and be able to move around.
“I don’t see myself growing and learning on a consistent basis until I gain the knowledge of running against the best in the business. I don’t see myself winning on a consistent basis until I learn from the best.”
Taylor is scheduled to tackle the 4th annual Midget Round Up this Saturday and Sunday at Airport Raceway in Garden City, Kan., with the POWRi Lucas Oil Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association.
