I-96 Speedway
“The Colemen Comet” Curtis Roberts Snatches Victory in World of Outlaws Event at I-96
Lake Odessa, Michigan (Friday August 22nd, 2014): Friday night some of best drivers in the entire country for dirt late model racing made their way to the fast 3/8ths (0.375) mile semi banked dirt oval of I-96 Speedway located in Lake Odessa, Michigan. The fans were treated to a thrilling show courtesy of the “most powerful late models on the planet” World of Outlaws Late Model Series for the running of the NAPA Auto Parts Lake Odessa 50. The UMP DIRTcar Pro Modifieds, and UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks were in action as well.
The defending UMP DIRTcar Stock Cars national champion Josh Frey was the winner of the UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks feature picking up his eleventh win of the season and ninth in a row. Luke Hubbell finished just behind in second. Kendall Marlink, Bill Brandt Sr., and Renton Joiling rounded out the top five. Frye and Carlind Forsythe won the heats.
The UMP DIRTcar Pro Modifieds feature was won by Myron Deyoung earning his first win of the season at I-96. Chad Mauer was the second place finisher. Johnny DeYoung, Brenton DeYoung, and Kenny Playter finished off the top five. The heat wins went to Mauer and Myron DeYoung.
Coleman, Michigan native Curtis Roberts and Zebulon, Georgia native Shane Clanton led the thundering herd down to chief starter Bret Farmers green flag for the 50-lap $10000 to win feature. Clanton shot off with the early advantage while everyone behind him shuffled for position. Clanton was able to hold a commanding lead until lap 42. That was when he would suffer a right front flat tire causing him to head to the pits. This would give the lead over to Roberts who would end up seeing a challenge from the defending World of Outlaws series champion Darrell Lanigan who would make one last effort on the final lap but Roberts was able to hang to pick up the win.
This was Roberts first ever career World of Outlaws victory. Lanigan was the runner up. Chub Frank, Tim McCreadie, and Frank Heckenast Jr. made up the top five. 2012 World of Outlaws Champion Rick Eckert, Morgan Bagley, Clint Smith, Eric Wells, and Mike Spatola completed the top ten. Heckanest Jr., Roberts, Clanton, and Lanigan won the preliminary heat races. Spatola and Jeep Van Wormer won the B-Mains.
This Friday August 29th will be season championship night at I-96 Speedway. There will be a full show headlined by the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds. Plus; the UMP DIRTcar Pro Modifieds, UMP DIRTcar Street Stock, and UMP DIRTcar Sport Compacts. The Pit gates will open at 4:30pm. The grandstands open at 5:30pm. Hot Laps will take place at 6:30pm. Then after pre-race ceremonies/ Invocation/ National Anthem the green flag is set for 8:00pm.
