Zeitner Flies High in West Series Return to McCool Junction
By Anthony Ainslie (McCool Junction, NE) -- it was a dominating performance on Saturday night for Justin Zeitner as the Malvern Bank Super Late Models West Series made their big return to Junction Motor Speedway.
After taking the 2022 season off, the 3/8 mile oval in McCool Junction, Nebraska welcomed back the Malvern Bank West series for the tour’s first of 2 visits on the year. Saturday’s event marked the ninth round of the season and the 36th all-time visit to the speedway. A 22-car field filled the pit area for a chance at a $3,000 payday.
Dylan Sillman started the night being top qualifier as he put up a 16.375 lap. The night’s three heat races were won by JC Wyman, Charlie McKenna and Bill Leighton Jr. The field then came back later in the night for the 25-lap feature event with Justin Zeitner sitting on pole position and Top Qualifier Sillman on the outside.
Sillman took the opening lead. The 19-year-old looked to be an early favorite to win, but his night came to a grinding halt just three laps in when he hit the front stretch wall while in the lead which brought out the race’s first caution flag of the night. That would hand the race lead over to Justin Zeitner.
Racing resumed, and more cautions stopped and started the event. Kyle Berck, who started dead last in the lineup, was making his way through the field when he made contact with another driver and spun out in turn four.
A few laps later, Andrew Kosiski, who won at Beatrice Speedway the night before, spun out on a restart. Fortunately for him, he was able to continue on and finish 13th.
Meanwhile, Justin Zeitner remained untouchable. The Malvern, Iowa driver led laps 4-25 and held off a challenge from Bill Leighton Jr. to capture his second win of the season. The win is Zeitner’s 11th career win with the series placing him fourth on the all-time win list. Also, it was Zeitner’s second series win at Junction Motor Speedway.
Leighton would have to settle for second while Charlie McKenna put in a solid third-place run. Derrick Stewart, after finishing second in his first visit to Beatrice, came in fourth, and Defending Series Champion, Jesse Sobbing, rounded out the top five.
With the Nebraska weekend now in the books for the Malvern Bank West Series, the Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking East Series is next up with a big Iowa tripleheader week of racing action. It starts with the tour’s debut at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa on June 21. After that, the tour heads north to the Cresco Speedway in Cresco and then will finish out the week at the Fayette County Speedway in West Union.
