Inside Line Promotions – HANFORD, Calif. (Oct. 17, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi was on pace to score his first King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series victory of the season last Saturday at Keller Auto Speedway.

Unfortunately, a mechanical problem near the midpoint of the race ended the night early for Scelzi while he was leading the event.

“It was a bummer,” he said. “We set ourselves up well all night. We qualified well and got through our heat. In the dash we went 10th to fifth, which set us up well for the main event.”

Scelzi timed in fifth quickest in qualifying before a third-place result in his heat race locked the family owned, Roth Motorsports supported team into the dash. Scelzi picked up five positions in the dash to finish fifth, which started him on the inside of the third row for the main event.

“We were up to third by the first lap,” he said. “We had the lead by the fifth lap, but the yellow came out to put us back to second. The leader rolled the bottom and I went to the top in turns one and two on the restart. I was able to hit the bottom and drive by him in turns three and four. After that I went back to the top.”

Scelzi took the lead on Lap 5 and held the top position for the next nine laps.

“The track was extremely rough with huge holes in turns three and four,” he said. “We were the only ones running the top and we were making a lot of time up there. We had about a four-second lead on Lap 14 when the yellow flag came out. Everything was going well. We got on the gas on the restart and it shook the driveline out of it.”

Scelzi pulled off the track as the race restarted and coasted to the pits following the mechanical problem. He was credited with a 16th-place finish. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/F-rHtMQQzkA.

“We’ve had the fastest race car the last three weeks and haven’t won,” he said. “I’m disappointed in the result, but I’m happy with our speed. Going into Trophy Cup I have a lot of confidence and feel we’ve been one of the toughest guys around.”

Scelzi will return to action this Thursday through Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., for the 24th annual Trophy Cup. He has one career victory at the track, where he has recorded a top-10 finish during his last two races.

“Everyone goes in wanting to win,” he said. “My expectation is to make the main every night and be in the top 10 in points going into the main event on Saturday. To do that you’ll have to be good Thursday and Friday to be in contention on Saturday.”
