Sides Motorsports Enjoys Career-Best Finish at Knoxville Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 12, 2019) – Sides Motorsports recorded its best Knoxville Nationals finish ever last Saturday when Tim Kaeding scored a fourth-place result at the 59th annual NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores.
“Everybody is happy,” team owner Jason Sides said. “It makes things a lot easier when you have a good run like that. The confidence is up and we can build off of that.”
Kaeding topped his charge to a fifth-place outing last year with another stellar effort that began at Knoxville Raceway last Wednesday. He qualified third quickest out of more than 50 drivers before rallying from eighth to fifth place in a heat race. That missed locking into the A Main, but a win in the B Main transferred Kaeding into the rear of the main event. He capped the night by charging from 21st to 10th.
“To make it through there was everything,” Sides said. “By moving forward and getting those points it put him second overall. I would say that’s 99 percent of everyone’s goal is to get locked in (for Saturday). That makes it a lot easier and you can focus on the racing rather than have to run a 22-lap B Main before you run the feature. Anything can happen when you’re in the B Main.”
Once preliminary points were calculated Kaeding ranked seventh out of more than 100 racers. He lined up on the inside of the fourth row for Saturday’s 50-lap main event.
Kaeding charged into the top five early and he battled into third place by the midpoint of the race.
“We broke a throttle spring so it made it hard to hold the bottom,” Sides said. “The throttle was so soft and everything was so hot it doesn’t come back as much. From that point on he had to run the top. Logan (Schuchart) and (Daryn) Pittman got into traffic and he ran them down at the end so that shows how good he and the car were despite the throttle problem.”
Kaeding’s fourth-place run also marked the team’s fourth top five of the season.
Sides didn’t fare as well during the event. He qualified 36th quickest, won a heat race and rallied from 18th to 12th in the A Main on Thursday during his preliminary night.
“Qualifying wasn’t any good,” he said. “It wasn’t what we wanted. We made the show and it was pretty good. We made the car better every time we hit the track. You always want to keep improving everything and moving forward. We kept trying the whole time.”
He then qualified 22nd quickest in his group and maneuvered from eighth to fifth in a heat race before being caught up in a pair of crashes during the B Main on Friday. That started him deep in the show on Saturday.
Sides won the E Main before finishing his Knoxville Nationals with a 15th-place result in the D Main.
“It was a fun week,” he said. “Everybody is good to everybody. It’s about having fun and there were lots of extracurricular activities everywhere. I want to give a special thanks to Paul Sides and Justin Sides for cooking every night for the hundreds of people who came by Sides Bar and Grill.”
Both Sides and Kaeding will compete this Friday at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., during the Second Leg of the Northern Tour and Saturday at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D., during the Duel in the Dakotas with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.
