Herrera Charges At Creek County Speedway With ASCS Sooner Region
Bryan Hulbert – SAPULPA, Okla. (April 17, 2019) Jumping behind the wheel of his own Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 45x, Johnny Herrera took on the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region presented by Smiley’s Racing Products at Creek County Speedway this past weekend with a charge from 16th to sixth in the A-Feature.
One of the few times in 2019 that Herrera will be on track after swapping roles to Crew Chief for Harli White; that role is one of the main reasons Johnny was in competition.
“Creek was a race I had marked down all year that I wanted to race at since it wasn’t going to take away from my duties with Harli, but also, it was a chance for me to apply the setups we’ve been working on for her and be able to feel what she’s feeling,” explained Johnny.
A little free to start the night, a fifth-place finish in his Heat Race positioned the Morton Excavating backed entry on the front row of the second B-Feature. Able to walk away with the win, Johnny made very little changes to the car into the A-Feature with the car moving and handling very much to his liking.
“I just had the back of the car too high to start the night, so it was way off balance and that got me buried. Once I got it squatted down where it needed to be, the car felt really good and I was able to pretty much do whatever I wanted in the Features.”
Asked what the biggest takeaway from the night was, Herrera replied, “It’s being able to actually see what the setups are doing so we can communicate better. I think setup wise, we have a good package and this showed a few places where I can go even further to make the car more drivable to for Harli.”
As for the next time, Johnny will be behind the wheel, time will tell.
“We’ll definitely race again this year. There are a few races we are looking at, but I just need to thank everyone who supports me and has made it possible to continue racing. Mesilla Valley Transportation, Morton Excavating, Semi-Crazy Truck Wash, Champion Brands, Maxim, Ostrich, and especially my wife, Ann. Even running a limited schedule, they still back me and that means a lot.”
The 2019 season marks the 35th year of racing for Johnny Herrera which includes over 140 victories in various forms of Sprint Car competition. For more information, and to keep in touch with the man called “Hollywood”, log onto to http://www.johnnyherreraracing.com.
