Inside Line Promotions – SALINA, Kan. (June 11, 2019) – Roger Crockett capped the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour’s Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek with a seventh-place outing last Saturday at Salina Speedway.
Although it’s not a result Crockett was aiming for, it was a welcome run considering how the first two Speedweek races ended.
“The first night we were trying a couple of things that didn’t work and it killed our speed,” he said. “We fixed it for the main event and I believe we were up to 12th in five laps. We were going really, really good. A car went down the front straightaway like they were going off the track. It was a really bad spot. By the time I knew I couldn’t get below them fast enough. I hit him and flew a pretty long ways and hit an infield tire on the front of the car. It didn’t tear up a whole lot. I think if we made it to the work area in time we probably could have changed a tire and got back out there.”
Crockett was trying to overcome a seventh-place heat race finish and fifth-place B Main outing a week ago Tuesday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, but the incident in the main event ended his night early.
The next night the team visited Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla. Crockett advanced from fifth to fourth place in a heat race and he was running in the top 10 late in the race when contact with another driver sent him into the wall, giving him a second straight DNF.
“We weren’t real good and the car was off again,” he said. “An aggressive move put us in a position to get into a crash. That one did tear up a lot.”
Following a rainout on Thursday – the second during Speedweek – Crockett wrapped up the action on Saturday at Salina Speedway. He placed second in a heat race to make the feature redraw. He pulled the No. 5 to line up on the inside of the third row for the main event.
“We weren’t that great,” he said. “The car didn’t feel horrible, but we just struggled for grip. We weren’t good enough to overcome anybody to get by them.”
A seventh-place run was Crockett’s seventh top 10 of the season. He finished 10th in the Speedweek standings.
“We got home and started looking at the car a lot better,” he said. “The frame got bent in that wreck at Devil’s Bowl. We didn’t look at the right places and I think that led to our struggles the last two nights.”
The team has prepared the backup car as Crockett and the ASCS National Tour heads to South Dakota for races this Friday at Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen and Saturday at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City. It will mark his debut at both tracks.
