Phillips riding high into CMH Diamond Nationals

By Trenton Berry (Wheatland, MO) -- This weekend the stars of the Lucas Oil MLRA join forces with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series for the running of the 11th Annual CMH Diamond Nationals. It marks a stretch of three straight events co-sanctioned with the country's top national tour.

Coming off a weekend sweep of the Freedom Classic in Salina, Oklahoma, Springfield, Missouri's Terry Phillips heads into the event riding high.

In addition to the weekend sweep he has topped four of the last six Late Model events he has entered, and trails only Jesse Stovall, by 40 markers, in the season long standings.

Confidence is high right now," commented Phillips."We go to compete, but Wheatland has had a way of humbling me over the years. It's not a place where I've been real good, but maybe we can turn it around this weekend. We've been lucky and hit on a setup that's worked good on both of our cars."

Phillips will be looking to kick the long winless streak in his Late Model at Lucas Oil Speedway. However, he does have a win there this season in his Modified.

He also has a new helper on the team and says the addition of 14 year old Cade (Tiny) Dancer has been enjoyable.

"He's a neighborhood kid that's been helping me the last few weekends. He's been my good luck charm. He wanted to learn about racing, so I was happy to let him help us."

In addition to Phillips, the pits will be full of drivers from all over the country.

Josh Richards holds a narrow advantage over Scott Bloomquist for the top spot in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Standings. Tim McCreadie, Don O'Neal and Earl Pearson Jr complete the top five. Jimmy Owens is the most recent winner, scoring a win last Saturday night at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Tennessee.

On the MLRA side, behind Stovall and Phillips, Tony Jackson Jr, Rodney Sanders and Randy Timms are all in close proximity occupying points positions three through five.

$12,000 is up for grabs to the winner of Saturday's 60 lap main event. The victor also gets a one of a kind diamond ring to commemorate the accomplishment.

The Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds are also in action racing for $750 to win Courtesy of Clearlight Inn. There is also a $500 winner's bonus in memory of Ron Jenkins, who built Wheatland Raceway.
