Sams III Improves During Second Time at Hockett/McMillin Memorial
Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 22, 2020) – Danny Sams III had a fast race car throughout the 10th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial, improving on his results during his second time of tackling the marquee Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event.
The Sams LaMountain Racing driver was one of more than 75 drivers who began the action at Lucas Oil Speedway on Thursday. Sams III charged from sixth to second place in a heat race. He picked up a position in a qualifier to finish fifth. That locked him into the main event in the 15th starting spot.
“The first night I made some good moves to go sixth to second in the heat race and I passed one car in the qualifier,” he said. “In the feature the track got rubber down and we didn’t expect that. We missed the setup and were too tight by a mile.”
Sams III salvaged a 19th-place finish.
He returned to the oval on Friday. A fourth-place result in a heat race was followed by a third-place outing in a qualifier, a fifth-place run in a B Main and a 12th-place finish in the Last Chance Showdown.
“I had a good start in my heat and was up to second, but it got called back,” he said. “The other drivers around me saw what I did and took that lane on the second start. In the qualifier the car was a little off and in the B Main everybody was pretty equal. It came down to the Last Chance Qualifier and it was the same thing. We were quick, but not quick enough.”
The weekend wrapped up on Saturday with Sams III ending fourth in a qualifier, which put him on the outside of the front row in a B Main.
“Going into turn three as we were coming to the green flag the guy on the pole gassed it up and ran over my left front, which knocked my nose wing down,” he said. “I was holding on once we started. I was able to maintain second for a few laps, but once a couple of drivers got by me it was game over. If I would have finished where I started I would have been starting in the top six in the Last Chance Qualifier. I think we would have had a good shot at making the main event if that happened, but it didn’t work out.”
The handling on the race car got even worse once Sams III was in dirty air as he faded to an eighth-place finish.
The team will take this weekend off before returning to action Oct. 2-3 at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., for the Short Track Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
