Zeigler and Moore Get First Selinsgrove Speedway Wins, Geesaman Adds Another Victory
Written by Bert Wojcik
Low humidity and clear skies, that’s all anyone has been begging for since the middle of June and finally on Friday night, we got just that. A picture perfect Friday night at Selinsgrove Speedway for the return of the Jay's Automotive United Late Model Series featuring the Selinsgrove Ford Super Late Models in a non-points event. After blowing a tire in hot laps, Chalk Hill, PA’s Mason Zeigler would get his 3rd ULMS Feature win of the season in a thrilling finish. Defiant, PA’s Gregory “Spike" Moore would take home the debut of the United E-Mods Series UMP style Modifieds feature, and for the third time this season, Annville’s Jasen Geesaman would win the Superior Homes Street Stocks.
23 Jay's Automotive ULMS Super Late Models signed in for action on Friday night with Zeigler and Beavertown, PA’s Hayes Mattern starting on the front row. Mattern set quick time with a 20.700 and gained an extra $150 from Integra Shocks and won his heat race, holding off a charge from Zeigler. Zeigler would get the jump on Mattern and get out to an early lead for the first several laps. A great five car battle would shape up with Spike Moore, New Oxford’s Rick Eckert, Indiana, PA's Gregg Satterlee, Jonestown’s Jim Bernheisel, and Danville’s Jeff Rine during a five lap period where multiple times cars were three-abreast fighting to crack the Top 3. Eckert would be the one to take that battle and rocket into the third spot. Zeigler would reach lap traffic and make quick work of the slower cars until reaching Dave Stamm when Mattern would close in on Zeigler. Mattern would try to go low on Zeigler and the two would make contact. Mattern then spun to bring out the caution on lap 14. Mattern would continue, but restart at the back of the field.
On the restart, Moore would get around Hookstown, PA’s Logan Zarin for the third spot momentarily before Zarin cleared Moore and set his sights on Plainfield, NY’s Chad Homan for the third spot, passing him while Homan began to slow. He would pull in with mechanical issues, ending his night. Satterlee would get around Zarin as Moore would find his way around Eckert for the second spot. 11 laps remaining as Zeigler hit lap traffic for the second time in the feature. Over the next three laps, and almost three and a half seconds behind Zeigler, Moore would begin taking off a second per lap to be within a second of Zeigler with only five laps left. Moore would lose a little bit of time due to the lap car of Tristin Neiderer. Zeigler would start to move around and again couldn't find a way around Stamm, as Moore reached his back deck lid. Zeigler pushed up the track and Moore would put a nose in front of Zeigler with a little contact at the line. Zeigler would hold the top side and use Stamm as a pick to get back around Moore and consequentially pull away and get his first career Selinsgrove Ford Super Late Model win at Selinsgrove Speedway with Spike Moore a close second and securing the Donnie’s Automotive Hard Charger by going +8. Eckert finished third as Satterlee and Fairview, WV’s Ryan Montgomery rounded out the Top 5.
“I think I slowed down faster than he was expecting,” Zeigler said in High Caliber Cranes Victory Lane regarding the contact with Hayes Mattern. “I didn't even know he was there. I hate that for him. Lap cars man. I tried to be polite but guess we need to be more aggressive with them because they almost cost me $7,500."
“I knew once I got beside Zeigler and I was behind Stamm, I knew it was over,” Moore said. "I can’t say enough for where we started to where we ended. I don't feel like I picked up or slowed down the entire race. I saved my tires and just ran my race.”
“They both did a much better job than I did,” Eckert said on his podium finish. "I got way too tight and just tried to fend them off and Moore went around me like I was chained to a stump. But another good night for us.”
14 Superior Homes Street Stocks signed in for the night. Rick Potter of Renovo was supposed to start on pole but pulled off during the pace laps. That would move Richfield’s AJ Stroup to the front row with McClure’s Aidan Mitch alongside him. It took less than a corner for Geesaman to make his way from 5th to the lead, going three-wide to pass everyone in sight. No one would touch Geesaman as he walked the field on the three restarts during the feature to take his third win in the last four events he’s raced at Selinsgrove, this one coming in dominating fashion. Stroup, Millerstown’s Brandon Moser, Mitch and Oakland, MD's Evan Foust would round out the Top 5.
“We struggled in the heat race,” Geesaman said in Victory Lane. “Tires make a huge difference here. Stroup had a fast car and it’s nice to have a place to race only an hour from home."
The UEMS Modifieds were the last feature on the card, unfortunately only bringing 9 cars with them for their debut on the big half mile. Shirleysburg,PA’s George Dixon and Harmony, PA’s Ty Rhoades brought the field to green for the 25 lap main event. Spike Moore, who pulled double duty, would make quick work from his 5th starting spot to move up to second. He would hold his line behind Dixon and then started making his move inside of 5 to go. Moore would try to out brake Dixon going into turns 1 and 2, but Dixon would hold the lead. Just as Dixon was coming to the white flag, Mitch Thomas would slow and bring out the only caution flag of the event, putting a green-white-checkered finish on tap.
Dixon would pull away on the restart, but it wasn't enough. Unfortunately for him, that's because he had a right rear tire going down. Dixon would pull up coming off of turn 2 and Moore would take the lead into three and four to take home the feature event for the UEMS modifieds with Mifflintown, PA's David Stremme, Concord, NC’s Cole Hilton, Warren, PA's Dan Davies, and Dixon rounding out the Top 5.
“That was George’s race,” Moore said in High Caliber Cranes Victory Lane. "I would have much rather had the ULMS win but we’ll take this win.”
Selinsgrove Speedway will be back in action with the Renegade Monster Truck Series on Saturday, August 9th with two shows at 12:30 PM and 7:30 PM. Tickets are available at renegademonstertrucks.com.
The next race on the half mile will be in two weeks, on Friday, August 15th, featuring Twin 20’s for the High Caliber Cranes 410 Sprint Cars paying $3,000 to win each along with the Keller Auto Body PA Sprint Series 305 Sprint Cars.
