[b PETALUMA, CA (8-15-09) –] Defending track champion and current point leader Alissa Geving of Penngrove, California logged a new entry on her already impressive racing resume Saturday night. Seventeen year old Geving drove her Tillett Tool, Pit Stop USA, Matt Cordeiro Enterprises #3X Maxim winged sprint to a new track record at Petaluma Speedway during qualifying for the second to last event in the 2009 All Pro Sprint Car Series at the Sonoma-Marin County Fairgrounds.
“This was pretty awesome, a new record,” said Geving. “I was super focused when I went out to qualify tonight and the car was set up absolutely perfect. I knew it was a fast lap because it felt so smooth. When I found out it was the new record, I was pretty excited.”
Geving turned a lap time of 12:378 seconds. The new fast time succeeds the previous record of 12:394 posted by local competitor Roberto Kirby earlier this season. Geving has a history of top qualifying runs at her home track but this marks the first time she has taken the single lap record at the track where her father, Gary Geving, is a former champion.
“I’ve had a good teacher when it comes to finding the fast way around this place,” says Geving, who just became a fulltime student at CSU Chico. “My Dad won many races here and he knows how to set up this car perfectly.”
Entering Saturday’competition, Geving held a 14-point advantage over her friendly rival Bradley Terrell of Sebastapol in the chase for the 2009 Petaluma Speedway All Pro championship. Both drivers were faced with their share of challenges during the evening that kept the many fans they draw to the Petaluma grandstands on the edge of their seats.
In heat racing, Geving suffered a flat tire which resulted in a sixth place finish in the preliminary event and later placed her 16th on the starting grid for the 25-lap feature race. In the money race, Geving wasted no time working her way to the front of the field and closed in on the top five positions by the 20th lap. Following a restart Geving advanced again when Terrell fell victim to a damaging crash with a lapped car, ending his night of competition.
In the closing laps of the race Geving worked her way past Ivan Wordan and Brent Dothage to take the third position by the time the checkered flag waved to race winner Brandon Davis. One event remains in the regular Petaluma Speedway All Pro Championship Series and will take place next Saturday night. On September 25th the track will host the Civil War Sprint Car Series which will also award five bonus points towards the weekly championship.
“It’s too bad that Bradley had the tangle with the lapped car,” said Geving. “We’re glad he is ok. We have been having a great race for the championship this year and you never want to see one of your good competitors end a night like that. I’m looking forward to coming back here this next week and racing with him for the championship.”
