Dominic Scelzi Wins KWS-NARC Event at Ocean Speedway
Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (June 25, 2019) – Dominic Scelzi hustled to a pair of strong results last weekend during a King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series doubleheader in his home state.
A win and a third-place finish moved him into a tie for second place in the championship standings. Scelzi is now only 12 points out of the lead as well.
“All in all it was a really efficient weekend,” he said. “We were fast from the get-go.”
The Roth Motorsports team opened the action on Friday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, where Scelzi set quick time during qualifying. He then advanced from fourth to second place in a heat race and from sixth to fifth place in the dash.
“They reworked the track for the dash so it was a little greasy, but I was able to get to fifth,” he said. “In the main event I bided my time and rode around. I wanted to have myself in the right position. We had a restart and Chase Johnson fell out so that put me to fourth. I got by Ryan Bernal on a restart for third. Then Mitchell Faccinto broke when I got to his bumper so I didn’t have to battle for second. I caught Willie Croft in traffic with six laps to go and I got by him off turn two.
“Ryan slid me when I was in traffic coming in to the white. He threw a bonsai slider in turns three and four and luckily it didn’t stick.”
The victory was Scelzi’s fourth of the season and second during series competition this year.
The weekend concluded on Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track. Scelzi qualified eighth quickest before he won a heat race to make the dash. A third-place run in the dash lined him up on the inside of the second row for the main event.
“We got up to second pretty quickly and then about 10 laps in the nose wing broke,” he said. “It made the front end really light. It wanted to get tight going through the holes. I had to run a safer line and couldn’t hustle like I needed to to contend for the win.
“I felt like the pill draw hurt us off the bat to begin the night. We needed to be in contention to make the dash and we did that by winning the heat race. We were in contention in the main when circumstances took us out of that. We’re really strong and very easily we could have been looking at two wins. I wish there were 10 more NARC races the next two weeks. I’m feeling pretty confident.”
Scelzi held on for a third-place finish, which was his 14th top five of the season.
He is scheduled to race with the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series this Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., before competing on Sunday at Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma, Calif.
