Back On The Track
After a loooong winter, the Legend Racing Team finally unleashed the number 9 sprinter in a double-header UMSS weekend. As we pulled into the pits at St. Croix Speedway, we quickly realized the competition in the UMSS is going to be extremely tough again this year. In its fifth year, the quantity and quality of cars continues to increase. Congratulations to Ron Bernhagen and all others involved in turning the UMSS into an awesome series for both racers and fans!
27 sprinters made the tow to compete in the Davey Tabor Memorial race at St. Croix Valley Speedway. With only 20 making the feature, the heats and challenge races became very important. After bending a radius rod in hot laps, we got the car back in working order which allowed Jared to hold onto a 4th place finish in a very tough heat race. We continued to adjust on the car in the pits. Jared was running a great challenge race until spinning while running 3rd. After going to the rear, he got right back to work and advanced his position enough to put the car in the main event. After a long lay-off, both crew and driver need to knock off some rust. By the time the feature rolled off, we had made enough gains to be very competitive. Jared rallied the car from his 17th place starting spot to 9th by the time the checkers flew.
While we learned a lot on Friday night in St. Croix Falls, we pulled into a very different track in Rice Lake which presented its own challenges. The car was way off for much of the night. We took a big swing at the set up for the feature. Once again rolling off 17th, Jared fell back a few spots initially. Once he was able to work his way up to the cushion, he ripped off a number of positions to end up 11th.
It was an up and down weekend of racing. We were happy with the overall results. The effort of the crew and Jared’s performance on the track give us reasons for optimism coming into this weekend’s races at Princeton and Ogilvie. Hopefully the weather cooperates. If you can attend this weekend’s events, be sure to do so. The racing in the UMSS keeps getting better and better. The feature in Rice Lake ended with a photo finish!
