CHICO, CA (4-8-09) -Â The 2nd Annual Bill Brownell Memorial is set to take place the Friday night, April 10 at the Silver Dollar Speedway. The 410-winged sprint car will be racing for $3,000 to win on this special night of racing. Brownell was a special part of our racing community and he enjoyed spending his time being involved with the speedway.
The Friday night Feather Falls Casino point championship series will feature the 410-sprints, dirt modifieds and the dwarf cars. The ASA sanctioned track will also hold it's annual EASTER egg hunt after the final heat races are complete. The Easter Egg Hunt usually takes place in the infield of the speedway. With this being a special night KIDS under the age of 11 will be admitted free.
Front grandstand gate will open at 6 pm. Racing is scheduled to begin with sprint car qualifying at 7pm. Adult general admission is $12.00. Juniors and seniors are $10.00 and kids 11 and under are FREE.
Bill Brownell was one of the founding fathers of Cycleland Speedway. The facility sits right off Highway 99 just south of Chico. The track is noted for the Outlaw Karts and has produced some of the top sprint car drivers in California. Names like Sean Becker, Brad Sweet and Kyle Larson all began at a young age at Cycleland. If we listed all the drivers today that started at this special place we would need two more pages. "Bill loved Cycleland and he especially rooted for the kids that came out of the go-karts and into the sprint cars," said long-time friend and co-sponsor of the night Shane Scott. "It's only fitting that we keep his name and the tradition of this race alive."
Bobby McMahan is the current points leader after round one. McMahan drives the Steve Harris racingforthetroops.com #26b. McMahan is a veteran of the sport and knows what it takes to win a championship. Last Friday night's winner Jonathan Allard is returning to try and make it two in a row. Defending Bill Brownell Memorial winner Mason Moore is also scheduled to race.
This Friday marks the first point race for the dirt modifieds. A strong car count was on hand for the Silver Cup Race of Champions two weeks ago. Randy McDaniel was the winner and we hope to see him return. Locally, Mike Sohnrey and Mark Abouzeid look to be at the top of the charts. Defending two-time champion Richard Papenhausen looks to make it a three-peat.
The third division this weekend is the traveling Dwarf Car series. Their informative website can be found here http://www.dwarfworld.com. Pat Weger is coming off a win at Placerville Speedway and seems to do well at Chico. The Dwarf Cars will return to Chico on May 1.
