CHICO, CA (6-1-10) -Â The exciting world of wingless sprint car racing is alive and well in Northern California and much of its success can be attributed to the exciting Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprints Shootout Series. This Friday night the exciting topless travelers of this regional series return to action at the one and only Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California for a special night of racing.
Friday's event was added to the original 2010 Silver Dollar Speedway schedule last month following a series of weather related cancellations at Silver Dollar Speedway. The event is "Bill Brownell Night" at the Silver Dollar Speedway with a three division program that also includes winged 410 sprint cars and wingless ASCS Midgets on the quarter mile track at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds.
The Hunt Magnetos Wingless Shootout Series consists of 12 events at three different California tracks. The series races at each facility four times between April and October for increased payouts and a $5,000 championship bonus sponsored by Hunt Magnetos that will be distributed among the top drivers in the series at its conclusion.
In addition to the championship fund for the touring campaign, the winner of each feature event in the shootout is guaranteed a healthy $1000 victory. Hunt Magnetos will also award various product incentives throughout the tour including a pair of $50 vouchers during each event.
On top of the boosted winnings, the Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Shootout will determine the starting grid for the popular Wingless Invitational at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico which opens the Gold Cup Race of Champions on Wednesday night, the top 30 drivers in the series as in concludes will be eligible for that high profile race that kicks of four big days of racing and entertainment at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds September 8, 9, 10 and 11. The event not only features four venues of open whell racing including the World of Outlaws but is home to a number of events including live music, a gold tournament and the Hunt Magnetos Chili Feed and the Miss Gold Cup Bikini Contest.
This Friday night will be round five of the Wingless Shootout Series and the second appearance of the year for the group at Silver Dollar Speedway. So far this season 43 different drivers have competed in the Shootout and sitting at the top of the standings is one of Northern California's most talented wingless wheelmen. Terry Schank Jr. of Santa Rosa.
Schank drives the Hunt Magnetos owned #1 machine and although he is seeking that first win of the year has claimed three top five finishes and four top ten finishes so far this year. In addition to the feature event success Schank has two heat race victories and is tied for the lead with Chico's Taylor Simas. Simas is matched in the success columns with Schank with the exception of the heat race category where he has just one less victory than Schank this season.
Sitting in the third position is former two time winged sprint car champion Billy Wallace of Grass Valley. Wallace drives both winged and wingless cars successfully and has found a niche in the wingless division as of late. Wallace has three top five finishes and four top tens in the series so far with a pair of heat race victories. Timmy Sherman Jr of Citrus Heights is fourth in the ranks, just three points out of the lead. Johnny Reeves of Elverta rounds out the top five ahead of Ryan Bernal of Hollister is sixth over Cody Myers of Browns Valley, Jerry Cisco of Rancho Cordova and Chico's own champion, Jimmy Pettit who sits ninth. Scott Hall of Lincoln rounds out the top ten.
An illustration of just how competitive this new series is, a mere 11-points separate fifth from first in the standings and only 45 digits sit between tenth place and the point leader. Three different drivers have won feature victories in the four events that have taken place and 12 drivers have won heat races.
