[b CHICO, CA (4-28-10)–] Following extensive work through the recent past weekend, the grounds at Silver Dollar Speedway are ready for action this Friday night for the long awaited season opener presented by Feather Falls Casino, Hoosier Tires, Riebes Auto Parts, Coors Light and Pepsi Cola.
Due to the acts of Mother Nature and her wake, only two of the seven scheduled events at Silver Dollar Speedway so far this season have taken place. This Friday night, race fans and competitors will finally have the opportunity to return to the famed quarter mile track that is home to the Gold Cup Race of Champions on the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds for the excitement of weekly championship auto racing.
Over the last several weeks, a repetitive weather pattern has brought a great deal of rainfall to Northern California. The excess water combined with handicapped drainage following a recent Monster Truck event at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds have hampered access to the facility until the past weekend where sunny skies permitted access to the pit area and racetrack so proper preparation could take place prior to the most recent rainfall.
"We are a go for racing this Friday night ," said Alan Handy, who put in many hours along with his team over the past several days to divert the standing water in the pit area and bring the grounds back to a favorable fashion. "The way we were able to prepare it these past few days worked well and it's time to go racing in Chico."
Friday night marks the opening of the 2010 weekly championship series at Silver Dollar Speedway. The event will mark the first time that 410 cubic inch sprint cars will tread the Chico clay since the conclusion of the 2009 Gold Cup Race of Champions. The winged sprint cars will be joined by the fire breathing Limited Late Models that will make their debut at Silver Dollar Speedway.
Look for defending champion Heather Bartlett of Chico to return in the Street Stock division along with fellow Chico resident Mark Abouzied who will return to defend his title in the Dirt Modified division. A total of four divisions are on tap for Friday's much anticipated opener, making Silver Dollar Speedway's return to life an action packed night of racing.
Silver Dollar Speedway has been home to auto racing on the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico since 1962. The track is located at 2357 Fair Street in Chico, California, 95928, approximately one half mile southwest from Highway 99.
