Brian Compton Wins Chico Enduro
CHICO, CA (5-26-12) -Â Sacramento resident Brain Compton dominated the 12th edition of the 200 lap Silver Dollar Fair Enduro race at the Silver Dollar Speedway. Compton completed the 200 lap distance with a 10-lap advantage over second place Ken Winland. Eight-time Chico champion Wes Brown finished in a distant third, some 21 laps behind Compton.
Compton led the early part of the event but soon Paradise racer Kevin Ward took control of the event. Also in the mix was Paradise driver Justin Funkhouser. Ward ran into trouble right around lap 50 when he got together with a slower car and spun around in turn four. Ward got stuck in the muddy infield and was not able to continue on. It was not until fellow race Jerry Bartlett came by and helped bump Ward out of the wet stuff. But by then, Ward was down over 20 laps.
Compton led the field to the first 100 lap segment. Funkhouser was only one lap behind at this point. When the field lined back up for the second 100 lap stint, Compton raced out into the lead. However, during the intermission, the track had been watered. Compton drove his car too deep into the turn and began to slide around. He did this not once, but twice. In doing so, he allowed Funkhouser to un-lap himself and then takes the lead. On lap 108 Funkhouser was the new leader. Funkhouser led the event until he tangled with two slower cars in turn one on lap 133.
On lap 134 Compton took back the lead. Funkhouser made a few more laps before pulling off the track. Funkhouser did come back on the track only to go back to the pits a few laps later. Funkhouser finished in the seventh spot. With Funkhouser in the pits, Compton had the lead all to himself. In fact, his nearest competitor was Ken Winland who was six laps down. Compton stretched his lead to a 10 lap advantage when he crossed the finish line in first. Winland finished the race on three wheels because he lost his right front tire with 10 laps to go. Wes Brown battled back to finish third. Scott Longmire came across in the fourth spot. Larry Muniz is credited with a fifth place finish.
