A Night of Three's at Silver Dollar Speedway
CHICO, CA (5-3-13) -Â The number three kept popping up during Wells Fargo point race #5 Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway. It was the third win in a row for Orland's Jake Vantol in the street stock division. Marysville's Ryan McDaniel won his third main event of the year at Chico in 2013. Rowdy McClenon won his second Perma Zyme Wingless main event in a row at chico and his third overall wingless win when you factor in his victory at MRP the previous week.
The "Rocket Man" Mark Abouzeid, Chico Volkswagen #27, led the opening few laps of the dirt modified main event on Friday night. Abouzeid lost the lead to Duane Cleveland on lap four. Cleveland, driving his All Star Performance #2c, held the lead until lap seven when Ryan McDaniel made a beautiful pass. However, what makes McDaniel's pass for the lead even better is that he started in the fifth row of the main event. McDaniel continues to be a dominant force driving his Team Harris Auto Racing/ Rex Hutchison Racing Engines #10. Another driver working his way towards the front was Richard Papenhausen. The eighth place starting Papenhausen worked his way into second on lap eight. For the final few laps Papenhausen gave chase but McDaniel was once again the class of the field. Cleveland battled all night long and finished third. Seventh place starting Oreste Gonella brought his car home in the fourth spot. Susanville's Matt Murphy started eighth and finished fifth. McDaniel and Papenhausen were each victorious in heat race action. The IMCA dirt modifieds will return next week for point's race #6. As of now, McDaniel holds a two point lead over Papenhausen.
Tri-County Portable Toilets driver Jake Vantol is turning the street stock division into a real stinker. Tonight, Vantol started from the pole and led all 15 laps to win. However, what was more impressive was the lead he built up in doing so. At the finish line Vantol held a 7.265 second advantage over second place finishing Kevin Lesch. Gary Newman drove one of his best races to finish in the third spot. Shawn Smith started sixth and ended up fourth. Outside of Vantol, the next impressive driver was Richard Workman. The Cottonwood ace started dead last but in just 15 laps passed his way up into a fifth place finish. Vantol swept the nights racing action by winning heat race # 1. Chico Volkswagen driver Lesch won heat two.
It's tough to be Anderson's Rowdy McClenon these days. Yet, start him from the pole and it's a done deal. McClenon led all the laps in the main event to win the third Perma-Zyme wingless point race of the year. The only other driver to beat him this year is Oroville's Ron LaPlant. LaPlant tried every trick in the book but was never able to pass McClenon for the lead. The Hot Rods to Hell #13 also won the lone heat race of the night. However, with all his success he still only leads LaPlant by three points in the Perma-Zyme point standings. Orland's Tony Richards finished in the third spot. Nick Larson started seventh and finished fourth. Corning's Nathan Johnson, #e85, carries the series sponsors name on his car and rounded out his night with a top five finish. The Perma-Zyme wingless sprints will return to action this Friday night, May 10th, for point race #6. Full results are located at www.silverdollarspeedway.com
