Brian Compton Repeats as Chico Enduro Champion
CHICO, CA (5-25-13) -Â Sacramento's Brian Compton won an exciting 200-lap Enduro event that took place on Saturday night of the Silver Dollar Fair. Compton captivated the crowd with his thrilling comeback after suffering a flat tire around the lap 160 mark. After a few laps in the pit area, Compton came back onto the track two laps behind Chico's Gene Guinn. Guinn, making his first start since a horrific on track accident at Roseville Speedway in April of 2012, was the crowd's sentimental favorite to win. Guinn reported after the race that his power steering failed him during the second segment of the 100 lap race. This not only wore out Guinn, but made it tough at times for him to hit his marks on the track. All of the people involved with the Silver Dollar Fair are proud of the effort by Guinn.
Yet, all the credit goes to Compton. With a new tire on his car and less than 30 laps to go he began to make his charge. On lap 175 he progressed through the field and was back on the same lap at Guinn. Sixteen laps later he was all over Guinn for the lead of the race. While Guinn did all he could to hold off the faster Compton, the enviable was about to happen. Compton made a spectacular move down the back straight and took the lead. The crowd erupted for his amazing come from behind effort. Compton led the final few laps and won with a comfortable advantage. "I just fell out of the seat," said an exhausted Guinn post-race. "I kept looking at the score board and new I had to be getting my laps back," said Compton after the tire issue. "After I passed Guinn late in the race and came back by I saw my number was leading and that gave me a sense of relief." It was the second year in a row that Compton parked his car in victory lane.
David Pierce led the opening laps of the fair Enduro. The Paradise driver has been a solid competitor during the Friday night races at Chico. On lap 27, Tim LaPoint of Lower Lake was the new leader. LaPoint suffered a flat tire on lap 45 and headed to the pit area. This put LaPoint back into the lead. Pierce led at the half way point. On lap 129 Pierce suffered a front end issue and that ultimately ended his night. Compton inherited the lead until his flat tire sent him to the pit area. At that time he had a two lap lead over Guinn.
Following Compton and Guinn across the finish line was LaPoint, Wyatt Brown and Kyle/Mike Allen. A full list of results is posted below.
