San Jose Driver Shawn Jones Wins Mini Gold Dwarf Car Event
CHICO, CA (3-28-15) -Â Shawn Jones drove the Zanotti Racing #26n to a thrilling and electrifying 20-lap Dwarf Car main event Saturday night at Silver Dollar Speedway. The amazing Dwarf cars were teamed up with the World of Outlaws on the final night of the 2015 edition of the Mini Gold Cup. The Dwarf Cars are always a blast to watch and produce some of the best dirt track racing in the Country.
Brock Peters of Eagle Point, OR led the opening lap of the 24 car starting A-main event. In fact, Peters would lead the first seven circuits around the famed quarter-mile speedway in Chico. Amazingly, on lap eight, Galt, CA driver Ryan Winter took the lead. It was amazing considering Winter started in the ninth position. Winter has always been one of the best to drive in this division. Following him to the front was Jones. To his credit, Jones, started in the 11th position and marched towards the front. On lap nine Jones moved into the second spot and set his sights on the leader. As the two leaders began to race amongst themselves, they also had to battle some slower cars. Unfortunately, on lap 13, disaster struck for Winter. As he was negotiating his way into and through turn one, two slower cars had spun and blocked the path for Winter. Winter made heavy contact with one of the cars. As this happened, Jones came into the mix and was also involved but somehow kept going. Winter was done for the night.
As the race restarted, it was Jones who took off and held a commanding lead over Peters. Reno, NV driver Joe Frock soon moved into the second spot. Both Frock and Peters had a spirited battle for second, but were also allowing Jones to sprint away. Gene Pires started in the sixth position and was battling for the fourth spot. The always fast and entertaining Kevin Bender held down the fifth spot. However, on the final lap Bender made a spectacular move to pass Pires for fourth. The hard charger of the night belonged to 19th starting Camden Robustelli who finished sixth. It was a pleasure to watch Robustelli. Danny Wagner went from 16th to seventh and should also be commended for his race.
Brian Quilty won the 10-lap B main event for the Dwarf Cars. Quilty started in the sixth position, but, by the second completed lap he was the leader. On lap three, Danny Wagner moved into the second spot and that is where he would finish. Mike Drake had a consistent race and finished third.
Jones won the first heat race. With the win, technically, Jones clean swept the night. Chuck Conover barely held off Fred Hay for the win in heat race number two. Bender dominated heat race three. Bender beat Jeremy Blackshere by over three seconds. Winter got the win in heat race four.
The dynamite Dwarf Cars return to Silver Dollar Speedway on April 24, point race #4, as part of the Bill Brownell Memorial.
