Rico Abreu Beats the Rain; Wins Brownell Memorial

CHICO, CA (4-24-15) - Rico Abreu had a rocket ship of a car from the time they unloaded at the Silver Dollar Speedway for the 8th Annual Bill Brownell Memorial prestented by Shane Scott and Withrow Motorsports. Anytime he shows up at a racetrack he is a threat to win. Withrow Motorsports deserves a lot of accolades. They presented 20 gallons of Methanol to the Fast Qualifier, 10 gallons to each heat race winner, and 25 gallons to the Hard Charger in the Main Event. That is a huge donation for those drivers and we all appreciate them stepping up and helping out.

With a lot of weather all around us and heading towards the speedway, the nights events were put in fast forward. Somehow we got it all in before the rains hit as the nights winners were being presented their trophies on the front straight. Rico Abreu picked up the popular 410 Sprint Car Win, Chris Warner won the Street Stock Main, Kevin Bender won an exciting Dwarf Car Main, and Brandon Powell picked up the win in the Economy Winged Sprint Car.

Rico Abreu started the evening off by picking up the Tyler Wolf Fast Time Award by way of posting a blistering lap time of 11.700. He would pocket the $100 courtesy of Chuck Wolf, as well as take home 20 Gallons of Methanol from Withrows Motorsports. Heat Race wins were claimed by Mason Moore, Brad Bumgarner, and Justyn Cox. Each of those drivers would go home with an extra 10 Gallons of Methanol for their performance. At the drop of the Green Flag for the 33 Lap, $3300 to win event it was Mason Moore and Rico Abreu who would lead the field down to Green. Abreu would get the advantage and would not look back as he would lead all 33 laps to win. Jonathan Allard challenged Abreu in traffic only to have something break on the car entering turn #3 and spinning to a stop with 7 laps remaining. The scariest moment of the night definitely went to the Lethal Designs #88 of Brad Bumgarner. Bumgarner made wheel to wheel contact with another driver as they exited Turn number two. Launching Bumgarner's car 20 feet in the air, and resulting in his car landing on the top of the protective barriers lining the Pushoff Lane. Biff Dawg would climb out of the car and walk back to the pit area done for the night. After that it was clear sailing for Rutherford, CA driver Rico Abreu in the Paul Silva wrenched, Abreu Vineyards $24. Last weeks Main Event winner Colby Copeland had another great running by way of finishing 2nd, Mason Moore would hang on to the 3rd position. Jason Statler and Sean Becker would round out the Top five finishers.

The Street Stock Main Event was dominated by 2014 Track Champion Chris Warner. Chris Warner and Eddie Hammett picked up Heat Race victories. Phil Marino gave Warner all he could handle in both the Heat Race and the Main Event but came up just short and finished 2nd. Eddie Hammett would round out the podium in the 3rd position. A great improvement from the first Points Race when he barrel rolled down the front straightaway.

Brandon Powell dominated the 15 Lap Economy Sprint Car Main Event after he took the lead from Dusty Barton midway through the race. Barton would hang on to finish in the 2nd position while Ron Wyman came across the line in the 3rd position. Powell also collected the win in the division's lone Heat Race.

Kevin Bender has been around Dwarf Car racing a long time and is one of the top supporters of Dwarf Car racing on the West Coast. He returned to Victory Lane at Silver Dollar Speedway by way of holding off vicious charges from the 4n of Ryan Winter. Winter has had a lot of success at SDS but would have to settle for 2nd tonight.

We return to action next Friday and Saturday, May 1st and 2nd. Friday nights show will be Chuck Patterson Dodge Points Race #5 featuring the 410 Sprints, Street Stocks, Ltd. Late Models, and Wingless Sprints. Than we return on Saturday for the 25th running of the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial at the Silver Dollar Speedway as the King of the West Sprint Car Series rolls into town.
