Scelzi Rallies From 16th to Fifth at Silver Dollar to Earn First Top Five of Season

Inside Line Promotions – PETALUMA, Calif. (May 2, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi posted his first top-five finish of the season last Friday at Silver Dollar Speedway, where he kicked off the weekend with a stout performance.
Scelzi and his Roth Motorsports backed, family owned team faced trouble during the opening portion of the night at the quarter-mile oval in Chico, Calif.
“We blew a driveline in hot laps,” he said. “We had to change the rear end and change everything. We missed qualifying, but got everything back together in time for the heat race. We couldn’t get the motor to run because we had a new fuel tank and ran into a problem with the filter so we didn’t even take the green flag in the heat race.”
That lined Scelzi up on the outside of the second row for the main event.
“We had to clean the nozzles out and pump the tank,” he said. “Everything was great for the main event. We got through the field pretty quickly and easily. I was everywhere. I ran the bottom, top, middle, infield, on the highway, everywhere. We had a pretty good race car. The race track was extremely racy. Turns one and two were very slick. Turns three and four were faster on the bottom and top. You could run either one. It was a blast. To be able to go from 16th to fifth in 25 laps, we’ll take it.”
Scelzi charged to a fifth-place result. Here is a link to watch the feature: https://youtu.be/uEDyz8ZiHqQ.
He teamed up with Nick McColloch on Saturday at Petaluma Speedway with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour. The team timed in sixth quickest in their group, which started them on the outside of the third row in a heat race.
“My brother, Giovanni, was able to go with us and we seem to run better when he’s there,” he said. “After qualifying he noticed that the way we had our right side muffler, the radius rod was a half inch away from it. As soon as the car moved it was bottoming out on the muffler so my right rear was coming off the ground when I was going into the corner. We fixed it for the heat race and went from sixth to third and almost ran second to put us in the dash.”
After the muffler change, the strong heat race performance locked the team into the main event. However, because of nearly 50 cars entered and the feature lineup reverting to qualifying times Scelzi started 17th.
“The race track was a minefield and we avoided the holes,” he said. “We drove up to eighth with about six laps to go. Then I hit a hole and almost flipped. From then on the car was really tight.
We had a right rear tire start going down and we got really, really tight.”
Scelzi hung on for the 11th-place result.
He is scheduled to return to action in his family owned sprint car this Friday and Saturday at Silver Dollar Speedway for the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial with the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Sprint Car Series.
