Gold Cup Camping Improved

(Chico, CA 8-1-18) California’s short track Gold jewel, the Gold Cup Race or Champions is the just around the corner Sept. 5th to 8th 2018. The 65th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions will feature a host of campground improvements to accompany the quality Sprint car racing on the ¼ mile clay oval located at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds.

Recreational vehicle size has increased over past years and most California Fairgrounds were built for 20 to 25-foot RV’s. Over time this has complicated accommodating the RV crowd that visits Silver Dollar. The campgrounds could once accommodate almost 500 units, but with newer codes and the RV length increasing along with the proliferation of slide out units, that number has been reduced to 400.

Two years ago, a joint effort between the Silver Dollar Fair and the Speedway added 20 new full-service sites large enough for today’s RV and with the current standard for hookups. Along with the size increase the demand for power has also changed. Once a 20 amp service was sufficient for most hookups, and then 30 amp plugs became the standard. Now, 50 power service plugs are required on newer larger units.

The Fair and Speedway have been addressing these changes with a series of improvements. Areas which were overgrown causing or impeding slide outs and long units have been pruned and cut back. Low hanging branches have been cut allowing more depth in many sites. Lawns areas have surveyed and cleaned or manicured where needed. Electrical upgrades are being done throughout the Fairgrounds to allow more 50-amp service.

Campers are part of the Gold Cup story. Special areas are used year after year by groups who meet and share the Gold Cup experience. Some are even named after the residents. Warren and Juanita Hane, longtime Gold Cup fans, have an area that is called Juanita’s Island. Another is the Angus camp East of the Pavilion which several parties and a free BBQ are hosted at.

Camping can be reserved for the week for $200. Individual nights are on a first come basis at $35 per night. Staff will assist in placing campers as they arrive.

The Gold Cup features 4 full nights of racing featuring the Civil War Sprints and Hunt Magneto Wingless series on Wednesday followed by the USAC/CRA show on Thursday with the all new 360 Platinum Cup added this year. Friday and Saturday the barnstorming World of Outlaws hit the ¼ clay oval this year joined by the NorCal Dwarf cars. Details are available at 530-350-7275 or at www.silverdollarspeedway.com.
