Scelzi Wins Bill Brownell Memorial
(Chico, CA 4-30-21)…Fresno’s Dominic Scelzi won the 25-lap, $3,000 to win Bill Brownell Memorial Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway. A record amount of winged sprint cars attended the first night of the Sprint Nationals with 61 competitors signed into the pit area. The dwarf cars brought 28 drivers to the show. The local street stocks had seven drivers. In all, 96 total cars were on hand to welcome back the fans, who were also allowed back after a 413-day absence. It was a spectacular welcome back party to Silver Dollar Speedway.
Colby Copeland grabbed the early lead of the main event. On lap one, Copeland hit the curb in turn two that ultimately sent him upside down and out of the race. Kaleb Montgomery took the lead. Montgomery went on to lead the next six laps. D.J. Netto charged into the lead on lap eight. Netto held the top spot until the final three laps. Scelzi was able to track Netto down and pass him for the lead. From there Scelzi led the final few laps to get the win. Netto finished second. Eighth place charging Ryan Robinson finished third. Justin Sanders worked his way up from his 14th starting spot to finish fourth. Justyn Cox started 16th and charged his way to a top five.
The Dwarf Car main event was hotly contested throughout the entire event. Brandon Shaw and Sean Catucci swapped the lead during the first two laps. Shaw took control of the race on lap three but by lap five had been passed by Shawn Jones. Unfortunately for Jones, his night came to an end on lap eight. This moved Ryan Winter into the top spot but not for long. Fourteenth starting Nick Velasquez passed Winter on lap 11. His lead was shot lived as Winter took the top spot back on lap 12. Winter went on to lead the final seven laps and get the popular win. Velasquez hung on to second. Mike Grenert was up front all night and finished third. Early leader Shaw finished fourth. Sixteenth starter Mike Reeder rounded out the top five. Great job by all those involved to make the Dwarf Cars one of the premier traveling series on the West Coast.
It was an old fashion shootout in the Street Stock main event. Jerry Bartlett and Bill Hall went back and forth on each other during the opening lap. By lap two, Bartlett took control of the race lead. Bartlett held the top spot until Richard Vander Ploeg passed him for the lead. On lap nine, Matt Micheli charged around Vander Ploeg for the lead. At the same time, Phil Marino moved into second. These two Hall of Famer’s, and both part of the driver of the decade series for Silver Dollar Speedway, showcased the speed on track and their desire to win. While Marino gave it all he had, Micheli was able to hold off his long-time rival and get the win. Bartlett held on for a third-place finish. Vander Ploeg was fourth. Hall crossed the line in fifth.
Special thanks to Care Free Pools, Shane Scott and friends, The Danielsen Co., Fry’s Metal, ManCamp Motorsports, Paul Olmsted Plastering and to all the fans who participated in making the Bill Brownell Memorial such a big success.
