Willamette Speedway would host the third and final leg of the 2014 Summer Sizzle Tour on Saturday August 16th. A good kart count was on hand with teams representing the states of Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, and North Carolina as well as the Canadian province of Alberta. Below the race report is a full breakdown of the final point standings in all of the divisions that were on hand for competition.
Ryan Foster of Anderson, California looked like he was on his way to a weekend sweep in the Open Kage division until he would spin his RFC Karts/Oregon Outlaws Speed Shop #41 RFC on lap six. That would hand the lead over to Central Point’s Mike Wheeler. Despite several cautions taking place throughout the course of the feature Wheeler kept his RFC Karts/Oregon Outlaw Speed Shop #1W RFC out in front to win the race as well as collect the 2014 Summer Sizzle Tour title.
The Bunce Equipment/Village Green Resort/BC Motorsports/Rocket Designs #77M RFC of Harrisburg native Makenzie Thompson was second followed by Philomath’s Caleb Henderson in the Henderson Hot Rod Shop/West Coast Floats #007 QRC entry in third. The rest of the top five would consist of Harrisburg chauffeur Tyler Thompson in the James Gang Pizza/Lebanon Auto Body/Schram Brothers Excavating/Rainbow Rentals #13 SKE in fourth for owners Bricen and Charlie James while in fifth would be the Burke’s Metal Recycling/Knothole Market #7 QRC of Lebanon’s Austin Jones.
In a caution filled 250cc main event it appeared as if Eric Scofield had the field covered. The Albany pilot seized the lead on lap five in his Scofield Karts & Parts/Lassen RV/Human Bean Coffee #37 QRC Area51 and was dominant from that point on. But on the final restart on lap sixteen Cottonwood, California’s Lucas Ashe would make the pass to get up front and blazed the trail the rest of the distance to earn the victory for him and the QRC Karts/Logo USA/Joie Of Seating/Joe Gibbs Racing Engines #33 QRC team.
Eric Scofield would finish second ahead of the Burke’s Metal Recycling/Knothole Market #48C QRC machine of Custin Jones from Lebanon. Portland’s Duke Johnson was fourth in his Oregon Outlaws Speed Shop/Luck O’Jonny/Old Black Daddy Foster Care #151 RFC and in fifth would be Talyn Roberts of Gresham in her Big Sky Landscaping #T3 QRC. Duke Johnson would edge out Eric Scofield in the points battle to win the Summer Sizzle Tour battle.
In the 125cc division Creswell’s Conner Hanson was the kart to beat. Hanson, hailing from Creswell and piloting the Hanson Contract Cutting/BC Motorsports/DT Motorsports/Horner’s Inc. #55H QRC, would lead every single lap to win the main event. For Hanson it would be a sweep of the weekend as he was the only driver to win all three rounds of the Summer Sizzle Tour in addition to earning the championship.
Casey Starr of Sherwood was second in the Trinity Pendley and Todd Miller owned Linn-Benton Insurance/A.A. Towing/James Gang Pizza #47 QRC while the P.G.H. Excavating/Oregon Outlaws Speed Shop/Northwest Auto Wraps/R.S. Race Products #19 RFC of Buckley, Washington’s Colby Thornhill was third. The rest of the top five would be made up of Grand Prairie, Alberta driver Benjamin Silliker in his Black Dog Drilling/QRC Karts/Sillico Racing #24 QRC in fourth and the Knothole Market/Big Sky Landscaping/Bunce Equipment/Scofield Karts & Parts #02 QRC of Kyle Roles from Lebanon in fifth.
In the 5HP Intermediate division Colby Thornhill would lead the entire distance of the main event. It would mark the second occasion that the P.G.H. Excavating/Oregon Outlaws Speed Shop/Northwest Auto Wraps/R.S. Race Products #19 RFC had visited victory lane during the Summer Sizzle Tour. However though the Wheeless Trailer Sales/Cooper’s Pest Control/Umpqua Survival/Central Coast Vacuums #7 QRC of Austin Sause from Cottage Grove would win the title.
Austin Sause was second in the main event and coming home in third was Makayla Patterson of Lebanon in her James Gang Pizza/Clayton’s Cornwell Tools/Rebecca’s Barber Shop/King Office Equipment #47 QRC machine. Eugene chauffeur Seth Riggs was fourth in his Riggs Racing #32 Hubbard entry and the Discount Race Car Parts/Terry’s Drain Service #10D QRC of Vancouver, Washington’s Kylee Day was fifth.
In the 5HP Opens Benjamin Silliker would take care of business and lead the entirety of the main event. It would be Silliker’s second win of the Summer Sizzle Tour and would solidify his position atop the standings as he would win the title.
Jensen Ternora out of Reno, Nevada was second in the Ternora Racing/I.T.S. Logistics/Small Revs Racing Engines/Dias Family Racing #1J QRC behind him in third would be Carter Patterson from Lebanon in his James Gang Pizza/Clayton’s Cornwell Tools/Rebecca’s Barber Shop/King Office Equipment #47 QRC. Fourth would go to Ashleigh Strain of Brookings in her Bauer Auto Body/DsignZ Signs & Graphics/Freeman Rock/Eugene Sky Divers #32 QRC and the Discount Race Car Parts/Big Sky Landscaping/Absolute Automotive/Frisbie Motorsports #1W QRC of Corbett’s Skyler Winebarger was fifth.
Last but not least the Pee Wee ranks would witness Jayden Trupp of Coos Bay lead the whole distance. Trupp, in his Dave Foote Motorsports/Nexdor Tobacco & More/Trupp Family Race Team #72 QRC, would also win the entire Summer Sizzle Tour point championship with just the single victory.
Sophia Bauer of Brookings in the Bauer Auto Body/DsignZ Signs & Graphics/Freeman Rock/Rock Vista Pub #10 QRC was second followed by the Grimes Racing Engines/Lucky’s #100 RFC of Medford native Trevor Grimes. The rest of the top five was the Brookshire Racing #ZER0 QRC of Bradyn Brookshire of Forest Grove in fourth and Lydia Trupp from Coos Bay in her Dave Foote Motorsports/Nexdor Tobacco & More/Trupp Family Race Team #722 QRC was fifth.
